Moraine Country Club

Moraine is one of my favorite under the radar clubs in the golf rich state of Ohio. Designed by Alec 'Nipper' Campbell it opened for play in 1930 and hosted the 1945 PGA Championship. The Club is presently undergoing a substantial restoration (per my definition) under the guidance of Keith Foster.
I don't have the technical ability to post photos but the link below will give you an indication of how the work is progressing. Perhaps one of my fellows GCAers can put up these photos. Enjoy!

I would have liked to seen it before, but word on the streets is that it will absolutely excellent after the work is done.

I saw Moraine before the restoration (check out John Mayhugh's excellent photo tour) and it was very good. But like you, I have heard from friends that the post-restoration version of Moraine will be fantastic.

I was there in May and was really impressed.  I'd love to see it after the work is finished but it may be a long time before I'm back in Ohio.

In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

Wow is really the only thing to say at this point, quickly followed by booking a ticket to Dayton for summer 2016


Do you know what work is being done on 10? I always felt that hole was pretty bland compared to the rest of the course. The green was interesting, but the rest of the hole is on some of the flattest ground and was just so-so

10 is possibly the weakest hole on the course.

I heard there was a select group of members that ponied up the money for the restoration. The one time payment assured no dues the rest of their lives.

Based on my handful of plays I actually thought 11 was weaker than 10, with both of them handicapped by being on the most uninteresting terrain on the property. Thanks for the pictures Criss, but can you also tell if the playing corridors on some of the holes have been widened? Specifically #11 and #17.

The pictures do look like the finished product will be great. #3 in particular looks like a huge improvement.

Thanks for the update. 

When I played there five years ago, they talked about Foster's plan for the course, and it's nice to see what's happened.  I hope to make it back up there sometime in the next couple of years.

It still boggles my mind that there are so many clubs doing huge projects such as this, with the economy in general [and the golf economy in particular] stuck in the doldrums.  The financing for this project makes a bit more sense to me ... paid for by a few rich members who can afford it, instead of every member having to come up with an assessment.
