For Jamie: Well done, Roger!
« on: August 21, 2018, 10:15:00 AM »
Just thought it might be nice to share this here. The most splendid Roger McStravick has spent a considerable amount of time organising for a more-fitting memorial to three times Open champ, Jamie Anderson.
Previously buried in pretty much an unmarked grave, this is simply wonderful. Right there in St Andrews Cathedral near many other greats of the game.
Roger, well done again!:

Cheers,
M.

What a thoughtful thing to do. Well done is right.

Excellent stuff. It would be sad if someone like Jamie Anderson just faded into obscurity. Sometimes you’d think golf history starts and stops with Old Tom Morris so good on Roger McStravick for his efforts in remembering one of golf’s early greats.

At North Berwick they have a wonderful thing where they have blue plaques on various buildings to commemorate previous occupants who made their mark in golf. Each plaque gives a brief history of the person and I think someone told me there are over 100 hundred of them now. However many it is it’s amazing how often you trip and fall over while looking out for them when walking home from the pub of an evening.

It’s a story as worthy of novelisation or moviemaking as Tommy’s Honour was. What touched me was that although I’ve known for a wee while that he passed away in Thornton Poorhouse, I didn’t know that I’ve been driving past the site for the past thirty years or so without knowing it. It turns out it’s on the road along to the Golf Club. The building’s long gone, of course, but I won’t ever be driving along that road now without thinking of him.
