Sounds like I need to call s friend in Durness who will know if there is any sightings or whispers, unfortunately he is on holiday but think he is back later next week.

Agree and just googled to see the beach and dunes!!


Any evidence it's here, north of Dornoch?

Some nice looking ground there and a few other places. Never looked close up but am always surprised how much water sits there in the winter,
 Not talked to my Durness friend but asking about in the "Dornoch" area the replies are a candid "maybe" but they seem to be holding back.

If you listen to the podcast of Alan Shipnuck interviewing Mike Keiser, around 33-35 minutes into it the subject of building a course near Dornoch is discussed. It sure sounds like it is on Keiser's front burner.

It is a shame that the land around Tain GC is MOD land and so OOB so to speak. The land where the course used to be at Nigg is also very good. Great movement with elevation change and some incredible views of the Moray & Cromarty Firths.

The MoD (ie the UK Govt, ie the public) do seem to own a rather large portfolio of land that would make rather nice golfing terrain. Many very choice areas around the UK. They've never been know to relinquish land much though, more like grab it when the opportunity arises and then hold onto it. Sometimes they even have their own 'restricted' golf courses on the land.

Keiser is asked about it in a recent Golf.com interview with Alan Shipnuck for their new podcast. Worth a listen. Keiser makes notes that links courses like Dornoch & Cruden Bay were inspiration for many of his golf developments.

I had no idea there used to be a course at Nigg. When did it close? Where was it located relative to the Nigg-Cromarty ferry dock?

it occupied the hillside overlooking the ferry dock and inn. It used to be 18 holes but was reduced to 9 holes in the 50's before closing sometime in the early 60's. It appears the moving of the navy's deep harbour away from Invergordon might have been the last straw. Shame as had it made it through to the 80's oil boom it might still be there.

Thanks for the information on Nigg / Castlecraig.

I drove down to the ferry crossing there earlier this year and when I looked back inland I did think to myself that the land there looked ideal for a golf course!
