I've seen it on a couple of top-100 lists - only £35 per day - might cost a few £ to get there though!

Anyone ever looked into hiring a smallish private plane and a few GCA folk clubbing together to meet the cost of a wee trip to Askernish? Might be less expensive if the pilot were a golfer! :)

They actually have a London-based member with his own plane. Jock Howard of Golf World and I, plus Lorne Smith and John Huggan went up there for the day on said plane a couple of years ago. Very civilised.

I guess it seems surprising that this is so surprising.  I wouldn't have thought that 10% of the best GB&I has to offer would be priced so low  ???

If you had a treasure of a course that was so good why wouldn't you want to price it accordingly? Wouldn't the value golf selection be more of the domain of the somewhat lesser quality but still good and fun to play courses?

Not saying it's a relevant comparison but I wonder how many of the top 100 u can play courses in US are under $75?

Chris

Without thinking about it I just assumed there would be at least 10 top 100(ish) courses for less than £50. Besides prices going up there have been a spat of new courses which have taken several slots that the cheaper courses may have occupied 20 years ago.

I think there are a few very surprising courses in the US which would come in under $75.  The problem is getting the invite.

Jeff

Portsalon wouldn't make my top 100...not sure it makes any lists either.  Its good value for good golf though...and thats what really matters.

Southerness is over the limit.  Its a suspect top 100 as well.  Sure you are not tinking of Southerndown? That would make my top 100; alas its over the limit.  I always thought it was quite pricey.

Using the favourable Euro xchange rate...Donegal comes in under £50 and it is rated top 100.

Kington (just for David)
Silloth
Carne
Perranporth
Aberdovey

Not sure why there are references to top 100 as it is not in the title. Mine would be:

Golspie
Wick
Boat of Garten
Moray New
Askernish
Kilspindie
Crossland Heath
Ogden
Kingston
Fraserburgh

A serious suggestion for a combined GCA-folk trip if anyone posting herein knows anything about private aircraft charters.

Is Kington on any GB&I Top 100 list other than your own? ;)

Mine.  Though that's obviously a less desirable listing than most.

Mine too and I've just checked it's in the 37-56 group in the new Confidential Guide.

I had an invitation to join a group who played there every year via a Rib from Ballycastle in Northern Ireland.  We had worked out that I could join them for Golf and Lunch on the first Easyjet out to Belfast and the last back to Luton on the same day. Sadly the weather never cooperated on the agreed weekends and he's sold the Rib and his golf clubs and has had a bike made for him in Italy. :(

I see no reason to identify under 50 pounds(at full retail) courses that are on a "Top 100" list.
That's readily available information by searching out retail prices of a "Top 100" list.

I'd be far more interested in a list of courses under 50 pounds that are favorites of Sean and other well traveled members of this board.
Some great lists already

Even better, a list of favorites that can be had for under 50 pounds by either a
1.Twilight rate
2.Open Fairways card (many)
3.other means (winter rates-etc)
No doubt some pretty good favorites can be had this way, as well as a few greats

There are good lists that detail Open competitions

Martin -

If you include Member's Guest Rates, my guess is you could likely play the vast majority of the Top 100 in GB&I for under 50 pounds. ;)

The list price on The Addington's website is at 60£, a little higher than I figured... Its always been at the absolute top of my list in terms of value anywhere in the world.

I believe Addington has lowered their green fee.  It wasn't that long ago that £65 or £70 was the mark down fee.  I think Notts too lowered their fee...so has Harborne.  Notts for £65 is a good deal for a top 50ish course.

Jeff...my top 13 (three are US) under £50 are

Kington
Cleeve Cloud
Cavendish
Lakewood Shores Gailes
Perranporth
Reddish Vale
LuLu
Lederach
Cumberwell Park Orange 9 (under £25)
Oxford (I fear for Oxford as I haven't seen the new pond  ::) )
Portrush Valley Links
Carnoustie Burnside
Strandhill

Have to admit I've played four terrific UK courses for less than £20 as guest of a member.

True top 100 and under £50 is pretty much asking the impossible if you deem the £50 being standard summer rate.

You might find a couple and you would probably find 10 if you expanded between 101-200. Most clubs realise they can charge £50+ with such an accolade.

Bill,

If you are playing as a member's guest you shouldn't know what the guest fee is as the member should pay all your fees including drinks and food. If you want to buy a sleeve of golf balls in the professional's shop that is fine - and helps keep the professional in business.

Mark,

I am not so sure. When I was still an amateur I often played with members of other clubs but always paid the GF myself. Maybe its a Yorkshire thing but I never expected a member to pay my way.

If I had to pay for every guest I took out, I'd soon stop taking guests altogether.

I'll pay for some when I deem it appropriate but given that the guest fee at my club is less than one sixth of the visitor fee, I reckon most don't mind putting their hands in to their pockets for those 30 Euro.

I think the custom re guest fees has changed because clubs have hiked up the cost of taking a guest on. In the days when it was £3 to £5 a guest or in some instances free for the first 6 guests then taking on 3 guests for a fourball wasn't too painful. Now that the cost has gone up to £15/£20 a guest I think it only reasonable for the guest to pay unless there are good reasons as suggested by Ally.

To Askernish? That's 142 miles from Ballycastle as the crow flies. I wouldn't fancy that in a rib, and it's got to be six hours minimum....

On my recent trip through Wales I would suggest that Pennard, Tenby and Aberdovey would all fit in this category.

We didn't get any discounts and they were all 50 pounds and under (in the height of summer, not during twilight)

Askernish is a no brainer.  A couple others off the top of my head are Brora and Boat of Garton.
