Mohawk Golf Club, Niskayuna NY
« on: July 30, 2015, 06:46:45 PM »
Had the great pleasure to play Mohawk this morning for the first time.  Had heard good things in past but had never made it there...
Wow, really nice layout on what seems like a compact site.  You'd never know you're in the heart of the city of Schenectady.  Course was in great shape considering all the rotten weather the area has had since last season.  Looks like bunkers have been recently done over and there was a nice mix of shots required with greens that had movement but not wally world like contours.  I'd highly recommend this place to anyone, definitely worth the trip.

Mohawk to Troy to Leatherstocking is a nice Emmett-Travis-Emmett trip. I enjoy Mohawk a good bit. I think I did a tour a few years back...yup, here it is.

Nice tour - enjoyed reading that.

Mohawk is also quite pretty in the fall.

Do any of you know if the Club followed Tilly's recommendations made in August 1935 during his PGA visit when he designed a new 7th green and a new 8th hole and did the work?

My wife's family lives there. Is it public or private?

I have played Mohawk a bunch over the years going back to High School matches in the mid to late 70's. To me it is a perfect example of a course that you could play every day for the rest of your life and die a happy man. It has a great mix of holes; long, short, difficult, easy, etc. It is also has interesting green complexes and is simple to walk.
Tom Watson did an exhibition there several years ago and he loved the course.
Although it is private it is not impossible to gain access. The Head Professional, Jeremy Kerr, is a terrific and friendly guy. I would imagine that fall would be a good time to try and get on there as play seems to really drop up here after Labor Day.
Truly one of my favorite courses in all of upstate New York.
