The Old Course & Alignment
« on: July 17, 2015, 11:30:43 AM »
Today, as Jason Dufner addressed his tee shot on the second hole at St. Andrews, Andy North said "He'll aim this at the hospitality tent in the distance."

It made me wonder what Dufner would be using for alignment if the tournament wasn't going on.

Tour players always have grandstands, flags, tents, towers, and such to use for alignment.

My favorite golf courses require more thinking than that.

For those that have played St. Andrews, what shots stand out as difficult to align, especially because of a lack of reference points and targets?  What holes are made easier by the infrastructure of the tournament?

In some ways, is field not playing the Old Course?  Uncertainty is less a part of the round than it should be (and than it normally is).

A lot of them are difficult to align, especially if you've never played there before. We had one in our group who in the fog, approached his ball as if to hit it 180 degrees in the wrong direction.

I love it when the caddie says, "Aim it at that steeple" and there are half a dozen on the skyline.

On the way out there is a stone cottage over on the Eden that my favorite caddie there uses as an aiming point.  Stay left young man!

Steeples are unfortunately inadequate for me to use as aiming objects. I need the entire church, or hotel or Colin Montgomerie...
