Best TPC Course
« on: July 10, 2015, 09:42:00 AM »
Technically, the best TPC course not named Sawgrass?

Watching the John Deere tourney this weekend, TPC Deere Run actually looks pretty interesting.  Compared to my preconceptions of a TPC course, it seems like it would be very enjoyable to play.

So outside of TPC Sawgrass, what is the best TPC Course?

Are we including the courses that have recently come into the TPC network? If so, I'd say Old White or TPC Boston, based solely on how they look on television and whether I'd want to play them.

Definitely...Old White would definitely be up there. Although I kind of count it out since I think of it more as Greenbrier.

TPC Stadium course at PGA West?

Would you want to play it frequently?  I guess that probably is a knock against Sawgrass too.  Is it good enough to build a trip around it?

Completely agree on Deere Run.  I played it several years ago and thought it was a blast.  Lots of variety and fun holes with a very interesting property.  Pretty underrated in my opinion.

I don't think it's really fair to include "by-acquisition" TPC courses, like Old White.  River Highlands looks interesting in spots.  There are parts of Scottsdale that look interesting.  Maybe San Antonio deserves to be up there?  PGA West is definitely interesting, though I think that would be a "by-acquisition" course under my rules.  I've played Tampa Bay and Michigan and would definitely rank those below Deere Run.

Fair enough, I'll exclude Old White and Harding Park. I'll stick with TPC Boston. Also agree that Deere Run looks fun.

The only TPC's I have played are PGA West Stadium and TPC Scottsdale.  I think PGA West Stadium is a lot better than TPC Scottdale.  PGA West has more interesting holes and the conditioning was better when I was there.  I have not played Deere Run and need to get out there since it is not a far drive from Chicago.

My favorite so far is Pete Dyes's TPC San Antonio.

It's also pretty cheap ... relatively speaking and everyone I know who's played it loves it.  That said, I live an hour away and haven't made the trip.

May shoot over with my 7 year old tomorrow morning for a couple hours to check it out.  Does look like a fun course.

TPC River Highlands is excellent, and possibly the best course in Hartford County (it or CC of Farmington). I'd like to play TPC Boston someday, to see how it stacks up. Same is true of DMK's TPC Stonebrae course.

supposedly that course sucks so bad that it is interesting. if you want, use the GCA search function on it.

Of the ones I've played, I'd rank them:  1) Sawgrass, 2) Dorado Beach, 3) Stonebrae, 4) Michigan, 5) Tampa Bay, 6) Prestancia.

Last year the one in Memphis was a perfect anchor for a golf trip including Tunica. I'll never forget watching a UPS delivery guy running into the FedEx headquarters. This year while the course was hosting a PGA Tour event my buddie called me up to say how cool it is watching a course we played on TV. Sorry assholes, but that's priceless.

The back 9 at TPC Scottsdale is really quite good. Lots of interesting holes with risk/reward choices, half par holes, etc.

The front nine, by contrast, is remarkably bland.

Of the ones I got to play.
1  Sawgrass   A constant test of focus and ability to control the ball
2  Woodlands  (no longer a TPC)  Lots of good, testing tournament holes
3  River Highlands CT   Another fun course, testing a lot areas of your game
4  Detroit   Played a bunch of charity pro ams there, was fun
5  Memphis   Was a slow, sloppy mess until they fixed it recently
6  Summerlin  Played and practiced there a lot (90's) Was a great practice course for tour conditions.

Dishonorable mention
Eagle Trace    Played in many wind days, and it was stupid.  With no wind, a decent, testing course
Heron Bay      zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Please God never again
Jasna Polana   A tough neighborhood, but tough to say anything positive about it.  The mansion turned clubhouse is cool

I really liked TPC Valencia. Stadium Course at PGA West could host a major if it wasnt in Palm Springs.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I have heard Stonebrae is pretty good and also ridiculously hard...apparently the wind picks up a lot there?  Is that the case?
