Does anyone know much (or anything at all) about this golf course, possibly designed by Tom Weiskopf, built on the Langtry Farms property, north of Napa County?

Here is a 2008 newspaper article about the project when it was in the planning stages: http://lakeconews.com/content/view/3146/919/

My understanding is the course is finished but gets very little play.

Tom Weiskopf did do the design.  Johnny Pott is the superintendent.  Yes that Johnny Pott.  I hear it was built by the owner of the winery to entertain clients and friends.  Not sure if they are allowing any other play at this point.

Jason -

Glad to see you participating. Sonoma GC is one of my favorite courses in the Bay Area.

Have you talked with anyone who has played the Langtry course? Do you have any sense of how much play it gets?

Thanks.

i can't find any sign of it on any sattelite maps ???

I wonder if it's like the Institute or Trinitas and didn't get all the approvals it needed.

The course has been built.  I know nothing about the play it has gotten, if any.  I am planning on going out for a visit with Dave Wilber at some point this summer.  I will keep you posted.

I found this:

Weiskopf's website sucks, the pictures overlap the tool bar, but I found that under his partner.

You can now view this on the new Google Earth 2010, sorry I don't have a link.

It's visible on Google Maps, you just didn't look hard enough (or Google the damn winery)  ... just south of the Langtry Estate and lake ...

David,

I toured the golf course a few times during the construction and grow-in.  It was just up the road from Aetna Springs a nine hole golf course I was working on in Napa Valley.  Funny this golf course seemed to breeze through the permit process  probably because it is just across the line from Napa County.

I thought the course had some interesting holes but what caught my attention was the amount of bridges on the golf course.   I peeked at a few of the greens and they had some nice movement.  I never saw the completed course and if I go back to Aetna Springs I will make an effort to see if they will let me play.

I really like the setting of Northern California hillsides and any course developed in this area I think will prove to  be a winner.  I am not sure if the course is open to the public and I am curious if this course will get a lot of play.

Thanks for the info. This course has certainly flown under the radar. I do not recall reading anything about it in the NorCal golfing press. I only heard about the course from a non-golfing friend of mine who owns property in that area.

It certainly looks like this may be a "personal" private course, played only the owner and his friends & guests.

David,

I've been to the course a couple of times, once during construction and once more recently. My impressions are consistent with those of Jason and Jim, and from my conversation with Mr. Pott I believe they're still pondering what the eventual format for the operations will be. They completed their permitting in warp-speed for this part of the country (less than a year), which has everything to do with the section of Langtry used for the golf course being in located in Lake County as Jim points out. The site has a number of wetlands, and I suspect it's the combination of desiring to get the permitting completed quickly and the wetlands that resulted in the noticeable number of bridges and long carries.

I agree with Jim that this is an attractive location -- for a certain type of golf project at least. Seems to me one of few remaining locations in the greater Bay Area in which a sensibly planned "enthusiast" golf project would stand a chance of being realized in a sympathetic manner, which is largely why I've been roaming the back roads of that particular countryside.

I looked at it on Google Earth.  Looked short and sporty.  No trees, a fair amount of bunkers, and is probably has some up and down terrain.  I'm going to at least call to see if I can get on?

From what I have read they are using the course to get people to join their wine club, but I hope they have some open tee times sometime.

Hello Mr. T
Give me a shout on my mobile or send me a note on my e-mail.  I may be able to give you some more info on what is happening in the North County/Country.
Hope you are well.  Glad to see you are still (on the forefront) of what is out there...especially from reaches of Scotland.
Say hello to "The Donald" for me.

According to an article in Departures magazine (March/April 2012) by GCA-er Tom Dunne, Langtry Farms is available (at $400 a round!) to guests staying at one of the 3 Auberge Resorts hotels/inns in Napa Valley.

Tom D. did not seem to be terribly impressed by the course.

Has anyone played this course?

I called last year and Johnny Pott had left. They are not accepting panelists. Still very mysterious.
