Is this the future of GCA?
« on: July 08, 2015, 12:07:36 PM »
In Japan it seems to be:

How does the Counting Crows song lied? They sold paradise and put up a parking lot....

Counting Crows? ??? ?

Ok how about Here come's the sun? I have a rather diverse appreciation for music Adam. But let's keep this about new brighter GCA renovations.

Hi David,

His comment is likely because its a well-known Joni Mitchell song covered by the Crows.

It's not the future of GCA...

Growth in golf is slow, but so is growth in the economy.
Poor business models are failing, the rest are treading water.
Good business models are succeeding, but even their return is hampered by the economy.

There is a lot to be addressed economically before we see real strength in the economy ... and in turn golf.

David,

could it be due to the excessive cost of playing the game in Japan (even by US standards) coupled with the fact they have been in the economic doldrums for decades that has finally led to this? Is this the future of GCA in Japan? Maybe but that is irrelevant for the rest of the world in general.

I suspect that tax breaks or some 'incentives' would be involved in some way.

It is more than likely the fate of GCA in America if the middle class continues to be crushed like it has been in the last two decades.  A healthy middle class is the best thing for the future of golf IMO.....

Calverton Links on L.I. closed a few years ago and there are negotiations to put a solar farm there.

Some courses closing is the best thing. There are too many as it currently stands. The problem with the game is not really money, it is more about people's time.

From a UK point of view, boomtime was 10-20 years ago. We encouraged people to retire at 50. That has now changed to working to 67 before you retire.

Golf needs to be nearer 3 hours than 5 like it used to be, the authorities need to speed the game up and some rule changes that dont alter the basic game. I think the 4 points below save 30 minutes per round.

Mark the ball once on the green,
no penalty for hitting the flag or the opponents ball,
no alignment lines on the golf ball.
All lost balls are laterals, same rule applies as a ball going into GUR but one penalty stroke.

I was involved in the music industry for 10 years, I think the biggest no-no among the muso's was to ever quote the wrong song writer and pomp the cover version.

Ha ha Adam,

Actually, I didn't know the name of the song and didn't realize it wasn't an original but that doesn't surprise me at all. How many songs/movies even are these days? I don't know much about Joni and now that I went and listened to her original version, I'm glad. For the record I didn't claim they wrote it did I? I mean it's not like American Pie - by Madonna where I can be certain it's an original.

David - To be fair 95% of people don't know the songwriters either, and Louie Walsh continually makes the mistake on X-Factor (the big music show with alleged x-perts) so your not alone.

I suppose its a bit like getting the architects wrongly aligned to the course to the GCA clan....no big deal really.

Ian & et al,
What is a good business model?  What is a poor business model?

It's like any other business, it must make money.
Many "can't" because they were built for too much.
