Obviously, I would look at things from a players perspective most times.
But I also was an assistant Supt for 5 years before qualifying for the tour.
I had a habit of answering a lot of questions without the benefit of a 10 second delay,
which became pretty popular with some writers. I guess I wasn't smart enough to give
a canned response in order to avoid controversy.
It definitely bothers me to see the anger at the "millionaires,'spoiled babies, etc" who in many
cases are giving honest opinions on questions. Some are certainly whinging, it is the US Open.
But, if we are going to ask players to be professional, what about the supposed professionals who created
what many of players believe were poor surfaces? Chambers has had problems since it opened (not just this week)
with the fescue. They have had to do massive amounts of extra work to provide surfaces, that approaching a month before the tournament seemed to be "acceptable". So while the USGA talks about sustainability, and conservation, they waste enormous amounts of time and resources to force fescue in to a Poa/bent environment, force customers to temporary greens/pick up your ball, to get the greens reasonable, and then the USGA comes in and basically kills all that work, leaving a wobbly, inconsistent mess for greens. All this in what is one of the 3 most important events in the world. I would bet my lunch money that Fircrest's greens rolled better last week
So, while I believe some of the players could have behaved better, if the course was not pushed to the brink of dirt, there would have been a lot less ammunition for their guns.
