Where to play near Hamburg
« on: June 01, 2015, 04:23:15 PM »
Hi,

The weekend of 27 and 28 June I'll be visiting Hamburg with a few friends and I'm looking for suggestions
apart from Falkenstein, which is on the wish list and I've contacted them.
There are a number of courses in the area and I'm not sure which one to try to arrange.
Hope you can help me out!

Cheers,

    Jan

I'm sure you'll like Falkenstein. It's a great golf course. The people at the club are very friendly too. Another nice course near Hamburg is St. Dionys. And I you have a car available, I would go to Winston, close to Schwerin. It's about an hour drive, but the two courses they have, are very worthwhile. Especially the links course, which is spectacular and fun to play. It was voted best new course in Germany a couple of years ago and not without reason. Have fun!

Dear Martin,

Thanks for your suggestions.
I have tried Winston golf, but unfortunately they are fully booked that weekend...
We're by car, it's just a 4 to 5 hours drive from Amsterdam.
I'll be sure to look into St. Dionys.

Cheers,

It'd be more entertaining for me if you guys use the 'Hamburger' name of the course, rather than alternate name 'Falkenstein'.

St. Dionys lost a lot of its appeal when they had to build five new holes after losing some of their original ground. (close to Dionys is Schloss Lüdersburg. They have a parkland course (Old Course) which is rather bland and a perfectly fine Nicklaus design, the Lakes Course).

When you drive in from Amsterdam, you'll probably drive through Bremen. You could try to play Club zur Vahr Garlstedter Heide, I really like the course. It is, like Falkenstein, member only on the weekend, but maybe you're lucky if you ask friendly. They have not much play on weekends which makes it really fun.

You could also play the Hamburger Golf Club Hittfeld. It could use some width, but otherwise is a fine tree-lined layout.

I disagree a bit with Rüdiger. The new holes at St Dionys are very quirky and exciting, but you need to play more defensively than on the old holes. I personally love the new holes, as they are fun to figure out,  but you can lose balls in the process.

Otherwise Hittfeld is the way to go, also a Morrison design. Walddörfer is probably the third choice in Hamburg.

I found both courses at Lüdersburg bland 😄

Hi,

Thanks for the input! I now have booked a tee time at St Dionys.
I'll let you know my thoughts once I played it.
Still have to get Falkenstein sorted though, so I might try
the Hittfeld course in the end.

Cheers,

  Jan
