Might well be the first time we see a hole *average* greater than a full stroke under par.

I'm going to guess 2.96 for the day.

That's the thing with these great short par 4s -- it's the choices and expectations that hang up the pros. Do they try to drive the green for a chance at eagle (but thus bring bogey into the mix), or do they lay up with an iron and try to make birdie the old-fashioned way? Either way, standing on the tee believing that making a par will drop you a stroke behind the field -- now that's how you mess with these guys' heads.

Mr. Woodland just made the first albatross on the hole. Expect more.

The first article has been taken down and it appears the tour will now play it as a par three: http://www.pgatour.com/content/pgatour/news/2015/05/29/14th-hole-byron-nelson-adjustment-2nd-round.html

14th is one of the few memorable holes on the course with the tee shot a key element of it. Pity.

That is almost as strange a story as when they gave all the competitors "par" on a hole during the final round of the 2010 (Actually it was the 2011 event played in 2010) South African Open at Durban.

Scratch that. Par is relevant according to the PGA Tour.

But when was the last time a course par 69 (or less) on tour?

Its about time par was put in its place as a way to easily recount score.  Par should have nothing to do with design principles.

How does the PGA Tour decision corroborate this presumption of par having nothing to do with design principles?

It reminds me when curtis strange insisted in the 1999 open championship , when the leader was way over par, that it s the player who plays the least number of shots that wins ....

Well , it s that reality week in week out !!!

Par could be 100 or 42, the player who shoot 270 for 4 rounds beats 271 .
