Greatest Lists - 1939-1966?
« on: May 19, 2015, 02:29:56 PM »
Is anyone familiar with any lists/ranking/etc. that were published prior to Golf Digest debuting their ranking in 1966?  The only other one I've ever seen was this list from 1939 that Tom MacWood uncovered: http://golfclubatlas.com/in-my-opinion/tom-macwood-the-worlds-finest-courses.  I don't think I've ever seen anything like it in the 25+ years in between.

Wouldn't dream of it... It's for my own entertainment value.  Seriously though, does something like this 1939 list exist prior to Golf Digest's version?

Wayne,

I think the pertinent piece is the bold red disclaimer at the beginning of Tom's piece.

wow... i guess i never really understood that this whole essay with fiction.  what a stupid I am.

nonetheless, I proceed with my quest.  if anyone knows of anything evenly remotely resembling an attempt to rank or categorize America's, or the World's, best courses at any point, say 1929-1960, i'd appreciate the head's-up.

You thinking it is fiction that Foulpointe was #10 in 1939? The only fictional thing is that it wasn't in the top 5.
