Photo of the Month Thread-May 2015
« on: May 05, 2015, 09:45:34 PM »
There is a bit of whimsy to this month's photo. I was in Syracuse (NY) this weekend to play Bellevue and Onondaga. The latter is a WJT design (Walter J. Travis) that boasts tremendous width and a wonderful collection of blind shots. It has a bit of a Biarritz, not often found on a Travis course, and a series of great holes. Any inquiries beyond my own should be directed to Ian Andrew, the fellow responsible for the course restoration.

This photo is of our hosts. They suggested that we walk the course, so I culled my camera gear to a medium lens and draped the Canon over the push cart and off we went. This is the par five 17th hole. What you are seeing is not visible from the tee. It plays up and over and down and is joy personified.

Can I please include this photo in my curmudgeon contest. My wife is the final judge and I think it has a great chance of winning. A young boy of slumped shoulders following an older gentleman making a Socratic proclamation about an obviously overly restored classic design is a thing of legend. This is the cringiest picture I have ever seen, I just don't know if my wife will see it so can not guarantee a victory but would love to give it a shot.

I got out to the Links at Lawsonia this week.  I'm still blown away by the beauty and boldness of this course.

Blown away is a perfect way to describe seeing/playing Lawsonia for the first time.  I hope it is just as special the next time around.

4th hole of Jeff Brauer's Gaylord Springs in Nashville from last weekend.  Tee shot and approach to tricky pin placement.   Fairways were brownish,  firm and fast.

Gaylord Springs #4 from tee P1070469

A series of photos that really isn't about the golf course but more about the growth in Seoul, Korea.

The first picture could have been taken last year around this time, the second in November and the third was last weekend.  You can see the 123 story Lotte World Tower, also under construction, in the background of the third photo

I learned the US Army plans to turn the course (Sung Nam) over to the Korean government after the completion of an RTJ golf course on an expanded Army Camp about 75 miles south.  I wonder if the course will survive given the ridiculous growth in the area.

Joe those are pretty amazing pics.

But if the second photo was taking in 1980 as it says on the photo when was the first one taken? 1970?

You weren't even born in 1980 were you ;-)

Still incredible growth, no way that course will survive when they could fill it with sky scrapers.

Moraine Country Club - Kettering, OH

Jon, what hole is that? I know there is some restoration work going on at Moraine, but I have played there several times (not since 2008) and that doesn't remotely look like any of the holes that I remember.

If I had to pick I would say that is #4 or #15 but that is just by process of elimination. Either the restoration is that dramatic or my memory is that bad.

That's what I meant, 16 (15 is the par 3, it obviously wasn't that one).

Here are some photos from the way-back machine, but unfortunately we can't see the same angle on 16:

Jon,

Thanks!  It is such a fun hole to play and it never gets old.  This 17th hole is one of the four holes Charles Banks redesigned at Wyantenuck in 1928.

I always enjoy all of your photos, keep up the good work!

Snuck in another goody this month thanks to Chuck J.  The Dunes Club is in amazing shape right now.
