Downingtown (PA) Golf Club to Close?
« on: September 01, 2006, 02:17:26 PM »
I hear that Hough-Loew Corp, the owner of the G Fazio/Gil Hanse
Downingtown GC is trying to develop the property.Has anyone heard anything on this rumor? The course is one of my sentimental favorites.
Originally designed by G Fazio in the 1960's, it had fallen into disrepair
until H-L bought it in the early 1990's. A young Hanse was called in
and transformed the course into something worth talking about.
H-L owns the adjacent shopping center, as well as various local corporate parks. If this rumor is true, it somehow does not come as a shock, but it would be a real shame.

Downingtown has been especially good of late in promoting junior golf by hosting events and providing access at reasonable rates.  It would be a sad day for the district if it were plowed under for development.

It wouldn't surprise me as that ownership group has put some money into another property- Bucks County CC- and the Downington property sits on very developable property.

Loew sold the shopping center adjacent to D'town last year.  As the posted article show, he's interested in selling the golf course to another developer for a proposed senior living facility.  From what I've heard, Bucks County is possibly also up for housing.

Tattersall's not far behind!

Going to be intresting to follow what happens to this old girl.

I believe a tree removal plan would be a great place to start.
We have a pool and a pond, the pond would be good for you.

If I remember correctly, this is where I met Mike Cirba circa 2000. I only played her once and it's been 15 years, but I remember really liking the course. Let's hope she sees better days.

The boro of Downingtown has, IIRC, declared it open space.  Therefore, it will likely remain golf.

I played it last month and stand by my earlier comment. Downingtown proves the breadth of Philly golf. World class bunker work done by Jim Wagner I presume.
