Sand Hills hole descriptions
« on: September 10, 2003, 01:45:48 AM »
I will be playing Sand Hills for the first time next week. I have very good descriptions of many of the holes, but I was wondering if anyone here could give detail on the following:

2, 3, 6-9, 12, 14, 15, 18

It's a long drive, and I'd like to be able to study the hole descriptions on the way. Thanks in advance.

Larry:

Don't have time at this very moment to do so but just got back and the place is...

                           SCREAMING FAST

Look for alternate ways to get your ball close to the cup on the greens if you're first putt is downhill - downwind. These are the fastest greens I've ever putted on and I've played my fair share of the ones we love.

If Gene says it's fast, oh boy it must be rock hard.

I can help on a few holes that you requested.

#3, Par 3, left is the way to get close. Just ask Paul Hermsmeyer. The hillside feeds your ball and for what seems like an eternity your eyes are transfixed and your mind wonders, where oh where will it come to rest.
#4 Downhill four with a massive blow-out left of green. All the fill from that massive bunker was used to make the green, so realize, that the slope to the right is minimized(negated) due to the contrary build-up.
#9 Don't get suckered to the right, the green has a spine that runs vertical with the left sloping hard to the left. The right is not as severe but above the hole is to be respected.
#18 I recommend two fades off the leftside narleys and one putt, to wet the appetite for the best food and turn you've ever had or tasted.

Adam, this is true only if the pin is on the front half of the green.  Long and right is better if the pin is anywhere in the back, because that's where your first putt from the front will wind up anyway.

A man can celebrate two birthdays trying to two-putt from the front half of the green to any rear pin.

Mike,

Adam is correct, I saw it with mine own eyes  :) With the pin way back on #3 Paul H hit a low left shot that ran forever along the left side, disappeared then reappeared turning right off the backboard at the very rear of the green and ended up-what-3 or 4 feet away.  It did seem like it took an hour for the ball to come to rest, and it was great to watch.

Larry,

I assume you've looked at the Course Description here on the site, which covers a couple of the holes you request, like #2. There's also a photo of #12.

You ask about two of my favourite holes at Sand Hills, 7 and 8. Both are short par 4s, with 7 driveable and 8 nearly so depending on the wind and which tees you play. The margin for error on 7 is tiny, and a miss takes you down a steep slope where you have several options--pitch, lob, putt etc., and as befits a great short par 4 these shots and the green are no bargain. A wonderful hole.

Number 8 is all about the green and the greenside bunkering. Wonderful slopes on and around the green can and should be used to great effect; the bunkers can wreak havoc if you've shortsided.

Enjoy!

Doug,
That picture of #12" is actually the par 5 14th.  I told Ran the wrong hole # when I sent him the photo (oops  :-[).

Larry,
I concur with Doug and Adam, and also suggest that you at least take a look at the course from the square and diamond tees if you don't feel up to playing from the diamonds.  #4, #5, #10, #13, #15, #16, and #18 are quite different from the tips.

Enjoy ;)

Cheers,

Gene- sounds like PERFECT conditions.  You must have been in heaven.

Larry- play rounds from both the very back tees and from a set of tees one up.  There are some extremely cool options that differ considerably from the tee you play and unlike so many courses both options work really well.  Good examples are the tee shots on 7 and 8.

Yep, remember, Sand Hills is Shinnecock from the back tees, NGLA from the middle.  Gotta do both, just as one must do both of those courses when in LI.

 ;D ;D

As for hole descriptions... that's a lot of typing and I can't find anything on the internet beyond what's on the course profile here.  Larry, unless someone gets real ambition, just take this course profile and let your imagination run wild re all the rest.  You won't be disappointed when the real thing hits you.  I dare say you might even experience a frisson or two.

For god's sake man, keep your eyes on the road! ;) ;D

Which, if you are the type of person that sees golf holes on every empty and hillocky terrain is impossible to do on the way up there into the sand hills... :o 8)
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

;D It amazes me... The ability to recall the holes at Sand Hills. I played 6 rounds in 2 days in July, and other than the occasional tee-shot over the just-played green, #1, #16-18, and a few others, sensory overload has led to a few hazy memories... Thank god for cameras! It's sort of like walking through Le Louvre... Sooooooooooo much of a good thing!!! Have a great time and say "Hi" to Cameron for me ;D
