OT - Rare Confidential Guide

Up on green jacket auctions:

http://www.greenjacketauctions.com/site/bid/bidplace.asp?itemid=14689&getauctionid=91

One of only 20 given out to friends of Doak.  This person must no longer be a friend :)
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

I would also like to know the good cause. I am interested in bidding, but would prefer to know where the money is going.

Probably not too well since his house was burgled and all his precious belongings nicked  ;)

Joking aside, there are some very interesting lots in this auction, some of which I'd happily bid on myself if money was no object.

This edition I don't know -- it is apparently one of only 20 copies in existence, so I doubt any have come up for sale in a while.

There's two copies of the 1994 limited edition listed on Abebooks at the moment at GPB700 or more -- i.e. about a thousand US -- and about ten of the public edition, starting at around £200

Just checked out the link. It would be more interesting (to me) if they told you who the original owner was.
Not sure what the cause is, but perhaps those that do will end up with a rare book and a donation to a good cause?

The personal messages behind the scene on this thread would be interesting to be a fly on the wall for...

This book has been available for a little while before this. I do hope the seller gets as much as possible for it. I do think it will be far more valuable 20-30 years from now, so part of me hopes the seller keeps it and will be glad so 30 years from now.

Sean,

The personal PMs I've received have been conflicting.  Some say it is money to pay for college and others say it is money to help someone who is having some financial hardship.

Is it really any of our business who owns the book and why they have chosen to sell it? I don't think so.

So this is one of the original samizdat copies?  With forgiveness to a member of the board it should be preserved (and if necessary deacidified).  20 years ago I bought a page of a magazine (Colliers?) with Hogan selling ChesterfieldS and another page of Reagan selling Camels.  I went to a historical preservationist and for a few bucks they still look good.

I got a copy of the Walking Bear edition because Tom gave them away on this board for charity.  Which was awesome.  But again, the CG is where the tide was turned.  Things like tbat sbould be saved.

I have one and will contribute 100% of the proceeds to MD Anderson Cancer Research. Any offers
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

The first printing was 40 copies.  This was apparently from the second printing of 20, a year afterward.

Hey guys, I'm the seller of this book. If you're friends of mine on facebook you'll have seen what a tough time I've been going through recently. I lost my mum to Cancer just a week ago and my brother to an overdose just last November. I bought this book a few years ago because of it's rarity...one of only 20 copies in the world. I don't need it anymore. I am selling it because I recently got accepted into Rutgers Two Year Turf Management program in New Jersey and I need to be able to pay upfront my first semester of college, along with flights (from Australia) and accommodation.

I guess that's the 'good cause.' I was hesitant to post on here but I've had many people message me saying I should. I really hope the book goes for a good price to help me get to Rutgers this year.
