Los Angeles in 1927
« on: February 22, 2015, 11:32:23 PM »
The following Dec. 1927 Golf Illustrated article notes the courses that were under consideration for the 1928 Los Angeles Open.  Not only does it provide an interesting view on the quality of the courses in LA at that time, but it has a couple of interesting nuggets.

1.  Brentwood CC is described as the work of Willie Hunter.  Hunter was the pro at the club for a few years during the late 20's, but this is the first I've heard of him doing any design work.  Behr is often credited with the reconstruction of the course that took place around that time.  If anyone has any more information on the history of Brentwood, I'd be interested in hearing it.

2.  The article references Behr's work at a daily fee course across from the Hillcrest Club.  This would be the Westwood Golf Course, which has been described in other threads.

"As much as we have learned about the history of golf architecture in the last ten plus years, I'm convinced we have only scratched the surface."  A GCA Poster

"There's the golf hole; play it any way you please." Donald Ross

FYI:  after Scotty Chisholm stopped writing for the Los Angeles Express in 1927, Darsie L. Darsie basically took his place at that paper as the golf writer.

Is "Darsie L. Darsie" a pen-name?

It is my understanding that was his actual name.
