Some of you have asked me to compile my reviews/photo tours of the Sandbelt courses in one place, and for others who might be planning a trip to Melbourne or are otherwise interested in the Sandbelt, I figured a compilation post would be a helpful resource. Again, I played all of the courses/took all of my pictures in early August 2014. And, don't worry, I'm not done; reviews/photo tours of both Barnbougle courses and New South Wales should be up relatively soon. Until then, be well.

For good measure, here is my favorite picture from my Sandbelt experience--the par-4 13th at Victoria, looking backward up the fairway.

Benjamin.

It's the 13th at Victoria - another tribute to tree removal. The right side of the tee shot - just over the bunker on the top of the hill - was smothered in tea-tree guaranteeing an unplayable lie if you were lucky and a lost ball if you were not.
It's now all gone leading to some thriving small heathland plants. It's an easier hole but a much better one for it.

Thanks, Mike, and apologies for the misnumbering. That's twice this week I've assigned the wrong number to a hole I correctly identified in my initial post. I've now corrected it. In any event, it's a glorious view.

Interesting fact about the tree removal--I hit my tee shot up the left side, so I admit I didn't notice (although I can see it now in the picture). But I will say that, on reflection, of all the Sandbelt courses I played, Victoria presented far more tree troubles than the others.

Nice article in Global Golf Post on the Sandbelt. Thanks to our own Ben Jarvis for the tip.

Benjamin,  just curious out of all the outstanding photos you have shared with us of the trip down under, how or why is this your favorite?  We all see something different or in varying perspectives, of course.  Is this your fav for a reason like making birdie or eagle, or some other reason?
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

RJ: Thanks for the kind words. I have high standards for my pictures, and those that make it into my final cut--the ones I would consider putting in a calendar for friends--are very few in number (a much, much smaller number than make it into my GCA photo tours). My choices have nothing to do with my performance on the hole (although I did par Victoria's 13th, getting up and down from the left greenside bunker), but rather composition, lighting, and uniqueness. From my Sandbelt trip (i.e., not including Barnbougle or NSW), only four made the final cut: (1) this one of Victoria's 13th looking backward up the fairway from the green, (2) the expansive, aspirational tee shot at Kingston Heath's 1st, (3) the sunlit tree and bunker to the right of Kingston Heath's 17th fairway, and (4) the tee shot at Royal Melbourne East's 16th.

I chose the one of Victoria's 13th for several reasons: the lighting is perfect, the content captures everything I love about the Sandbelt (the sand, the turf, the incredibly varied colors from a relatively restricted palette, the vast, sweeping playing corridors, the beautiful trees and other flora that frame those corridors without interfering with play, the surprisingly rolling topography (at least at Royal Melbourne and parts of Victoria)), and the composition works very well (especially the mimicry between the lobes of the bunker in the foreground and the bunches of dark-green trees in the background). I could go on, but hopefully that helps.
