Outstanding Courses with Abundant Water
« on: February 10, 2015, 12:02:07 PM »
My, beloved, Muirfield Village is blessed with numerous natural streams w/pump station maintained water flow, providing greenside ponding (#5), and the use of (4) additional ponds. The Golf Club utilizes (6) ponds and additional natural stream hazards,#5,#6.ANGC features ponds (#11,#16) with the additional (par 5) stream forced carries.
Since the above courses' water utilization are regarded appropriate,when/why is water frequency considered oppressive,if the land/water dictate the design?Does frequent water pinching provide acceptance rather than forced carries? What Golden Age courses,if any, utilized frequent water hazards?

Merion has its little streams in play on #4, 5, 9, 11, and 12.

Pine Valley has ponds in play on #5, 14, 15, 16 and 18.

Tim,

Wilshire has one of the finest uses of a single hazard that I've ever seen.

It winds through the property and comes into play on about a dozen holes.

Glen Ridge in New Jersey also utilizes streams/ponds on about 9 holes.

For Golden Age courses that make good use of a single creek across several holes, I'd say Oak Hill East, Inverness, and Olympia Fields North.

Thanks fellas. Was expecting a Muirfield Village bashing, since this course provides only (7) holes without some form of water hazard.
Played Olympia Fields long ago, forgot the water features.
