What does anyone know about Washington Golf & CC - DC area
« on: February 09, 2015, 11:49:44 AM »
I was looking at an email from my alumni association from SDSM&T (South Dakota School of Mines & Technology for those few who didn't automatically know) mentioning an upcoming alumni gathering in the DC area will be held at Washington Golf & CC.   A quick visit to their website says at one point the course design involved Donald Ross and Toomey and Flynn.

I did a quick search on here but didn't find anything.

What does everyone on here know about Washington G&CC?  Is it still the same course that Ross or Toomey and Flynn worked on?  How much remains?  Is it a worthwhile road trip?

Just wondering if I need to plan a junket (I mean business trip) to VA in the future?

Thanks,

Daryl, I played a pro am there years ago. Since I am so old my memory may not serve me well.  A number of changes had to be made to the course.  It has some nice terrain but I think very little is left of Ross.  I seem to remember that a few holes had to be moved/changed because of road construction.  It had a pretty exclusive membership.

It's a Ross design that has some holes that Flynn added or modified. It's a short course on a very small, very hilly site. However, don't let that dissuade you. There is plenty of history there and the routing is virtually unchanged since Flynn was there. The greens may be original - I know the 2nd is. If you're in DC on business and can arrange a game, don't pass it up. After Columbia CC, it's my second favorite in the DC area.

Grab a rental car and a map, some nice courses out there.

Whiskey Creek and PB Dye are two of my favorites. Both very close to WCC

Look up Washington Golf monthly and look at the course list. Played a very nice one down by the Old Prison in Lorton. Potomac Park is a blast, poor course but you gotta love using the Washingtom Monument as an aiming point?

I thought Washington G & CC was in Arlington and Whiskey Creek was out toward Frederick?

I played there six years ago, with the assistant and two other Pros.  It was very good, short, hilly, tricky, and firm for a private club.
It is the only course that I know off that does NOT allow pull carts.  The shop called pull carts rocket launchers.
Play it if you have the chance.

Four Streams does not allow pull carts.  I don't know for certain but my guess is that many do not allow pull/push carts.
