I'd echo the calls for Hawtree although I suspect that at least some of the others voting for him are doing so so that he gets a mauling for perceived poor work. Clearly he's worked on a lot of the courses over the years including many for the Open and I certainly don't believe its all bad. I'd certainly like to hear his thoughts on design. There's also the family history to consider and it would be good to get some chat on that also.

Beyond Hawtree, I like the idea of hearing from archies based on this side of the Atlantic such as our own Scott MacPherson and Robin Hiseman and hearing more of their ideas and what they are upto. It would also be good to hear from guys who seem to be outwith the GCA fold such as Tom MacKenzie and Martin Ebert. Anything really that challenges the group think of GCA.

I wanted to let this run before weighing in.

The first choice would be Brian Curley. I think the recent events in China are far bigger deal than the coverage suggests. I think the second shoe just dropped for architecture and we will see another round of designers disappear and even greater competition for the remaining work. I think he could provide critical insight on what has just happened and what his outlook is for the future. Others could include Dana Fry, Lee Schmidt ...

My second choice is Mike Davis. I think we need to hear from someone on the cutting edge on the drive for sustainability. I don’t want the marketing agenda, I want somebody who’s walking the walk to reduce inputs and water consumption through active design strategies. If they went this route, they might choose RTJ Jr. (name recognition) but I’d rather see someone like Andy Staples. But Mike Davis is still the best one to drive the message because of his position of importance in golf.

My third choice would be Martin Hawtree. Lifetime in design, worked throughout the world, high profile renovations, high profile design work, he’s seen it all and done it all. This would provide a perspective of work in other regions, the Old Course renovation makes an interesting topic and provides him with an ideal medium to answer his critics. Alternatives would include Martin Ebbert and Bob Harrison.

My forth would be Richard Mandell. My reasoning is simple, it’s important to recognize that not everything needs to be a World Top 100 to be important. The architecture week needs a “step back moment” where affordable and accessible golf be given its moment. Frankly, these projects are far more important to “golf” than the courses that intelligentsia spend debating the merits of. It’s chance for someone to have a conversation of how and why communities should still invest in their golf facilities. Other possibilities include people like Bill Amick, Jim Blaukovich, Ed Beidel, etc, etc. (there are too many designers who have always thought of accessibility and fun before personal accolades)

My final “group” is a suggested panel, Alice Dye, Vicki Martz, Jan Beljan and Cynthia Dye McGarey. These are some amazing trail blazing women who have all had to build careers and portfolios in a sport that can still be sexist. It would be nice for a young woman interested in golf design to go to that interview and be inspired to push forward with that career choice.

What I don’t want is more of Tom, Gil and Bill. Great guys, fantastic designers, but there’s so much more to talk about. Have them back the following year when each opens a significant course. Golf course architecture could use a few more voices and some breadth to the discussion.

p.s  ... to those who suggested me - thanks - very kind of you - but I doubt Matt has even heard my name ;D

What about the addition of a tour pro for some additional perspective - Geoff Ogilvy?

Mike Davis, Lester George .... Geoff Ogilvy, good idea.  But then represent the more conventional tour pro perspective such as Hunter Mahan.

However, we all preach to our own particular sub-cult choir.  Let's have some real diversity.

For American History buffs, there have been actors staging mock debates between Alexander Hamilton & Thomas Jefferson discussing among other things their respective visions for the country ....

There should be one for GCA.  Who would play AM?  Who would play RTJsr?

Ian's list is spot on - all great and good reason's behind them.

I hear C&C, Hanse, Fazio Jack before - lets get some new blood.

A few others I would add are

- Jay Blasi - Chambers Bay is this year - lets start the hype.
- Rob Collins - lets tout the 9 hole option and showcase Sweetens Cove.
-  Ran - why not!

Love this sentiment Ian.  That is exactly why I keep agitating them to expand this week of coverage into a weekly show (I made my argument here: http://tinyurl.com/gcaongc).  This is a broad and important topic, with many voices (like yours) and many formats that could be explored.

Don't mean to hijack the thread.  Just want to say +1, and then some.

And yes, we all need to remember that women have a role to play in the profession of golf course architecture.

Well done Ian.

I'd be interested to hear from our very own Mr. Flemma about his experience both playing Seminole and learning about all the architectural features of the course and all the wonderful stories he's hearing about past Coleman invitationals. I'd also love to know whether and how the routing impacts the pace of play at Seminole, particularly with all the fivesomes on the daily tee sheet. I'll have my DVR set for that as I unfortunately will be working that morning, but I can't wait! So exciting!

''I'd also love to know whether and how the routing impacts the pace of play at Seminole, particularly with all the fivesomes on the daily tee sheet.''

Ok, I have let a bunch of these slide.  Pace of Play and 5somes is totally not what I meant in prior posts.  I think you need to read up on the ME generation to get it.  Mob rule has no place on a golf course and it is not inline with the traditions of the game.

Ian, they did a wonderful segment with Faldo and Matty G (i think) at Winter Park in Florida.  They both played the course in trolleys and showcased a local muni.  It was a great segment and more of that needs to be shown imo.

Ian:

I appreciated your list of ideas and the reasons behind them.  However, it's The Golf Channel, and they seem to be more interested in championing the big developers [and potential advertisers] than they are in finding the next undiscovered architect.  I doubt I'd have been on their list just a few years ago, so many of the young people mentioned on this thread are going to have to do something big before they can expect a call.

One day in and I already like where it is going!!!! Starting off the week with the belief that NGLA should be #1, not ANGC or Pine Valley by Geoff Shackelford.
