1896 NY Times club reviews
« on: January 05, 2015, 12:39:14 PM »
On a bunch of Sundays in spring of 1896, the Times reviewed many golf clubs.  This is at a time when golf is just beginning to blossom in the NY area, so they are a fun read.  Note that drawings are used for illustrations, instead of photographs.  I love them.

Here is a brief summary of each article:

March 1:  St. Andrews GC and Ardsley Casino
March 8:  Shinnecock Hills
March 15:  Lakewood
March 22:  Knollwood
March 29:  Morristown
April 5:  a variety (Tuxedo, Paterson, and Richmond)

Then three more Sunday articles looks at some clubs in other towns:

April 19:  Chicago clubs
April 26:  Boston clubs
May 3:  Philly clubs

I know some of these articles have been posted on this site before, but I think a nicely organized presentation of them is worthwhile.  You can view them all here:

Please, enjoy.

A small tidbit of knowledge from the Philly article that I liked was identifying that Devon used Willie Campbell.  Previous documents (like the Golfers' Record) suggested it was just two club members that laid it out.

Great stuff. Thanks.

All I can think, looking at those pages, is: Oh, God, the LABOR involved in producing them!

Gotta love 2 Tweedies among the crack Chicago players of the day.  Now if only they had a contemporary relative with a penchant for making book....

And if you read the poorly focused article on Knollwood, you'll see lots of good info on Willie Park's involvement.   :)

Just today I found another one that fits in the series, also from March 1, this one on the Ardsley Casino:
