Thoughts on Streamsong
« on: December 19, 2014, 06:49:04 PM »
After a long drive through the largely featureless central Florida landscape, a tiny sign saying 'Streamsong' appears, directing you onto an even smaller road into the wilderness. Fear not, for at the end of this road a veritable golfing paradise awaits...

The clubhouse sits between a couple of large 'dunes', looking like some kind of futuristic megalomaniac's base from a Bond movie. Wonderfully apt, of course! Of course they're not dunes. They're, I guess properly titled 'spoil heaps'. But they resemble dunes in every detail, so we'll call them dunes! That's going to be the major theme for the day and you'll freakin LOVE it.

A Scot in a treeless So Fla environment! Were you sunburnt by the time you reached that front door or did your skin wait to the first tee before exploding?  ;D

Luckily it was December, so only a mere 80 degrees! Jolly fortunate we have factor 30 sunscreen!!!!

There's a wonderfully casual air at the first tee. Caddies or pull carts appear as you wish and it all feels very relaxed.

Then comes the first tee. So this was my Coore and Crenshaw baptism. I guess I expected a Gentle Ben introduction. Instead, they presented me with a do or die carry! Beautiful and deadly. Sweet!

Loved the slice of the old railroad rail used as the tee marker. More similar to follow.

And here's your pair of fine young laddies. The admiral bond and the fat bald purveyor of percussive thrash.

Such fine looking boys...

Martin,

# 1 on Red might be the most difficult hole on the property.

While I think it's a terrific hole, I'd rather encounter it later in the round

It certainly would be a nice hole to play after your swing was "in gear". It would be a great 15th or 16th hole.

Not sure I agree- I think it's one of the easier 5s at the complex.

We played the Blue first and that's really a great opener.  Then Red 1 is much more manageable after lunch  :)

I also thought the first at Red wasn't all that difficult.  It has a very generous fairway and the forced carry really isn't a factor.

Jim,

The forced carry isn't the difficult part of the hole.

What did you score and what's your handicap ?

Hey Pat -

I made reference to the forced carry because it was mentioned earlier in the thread.  I realize it's not meant to be a significant hazard.

I made par.  At the time, I was probably playing to an 8.

I found the most difficult part of the hole to be the second shot.  Judging the change in elevation and not being able to see the putting surface makes pulling the right club difficult.

Jim,

In our most recent two plays only one golfer of eight hit that green in reg.

I'd rather play it after lunch as it's too difficult at 8:00 am

Pretty nice clubhouse as clubhouses go. This is the view from the golf courses side:

I really admired these blowout bunkers on the right side of #3. They were actually little saving areas as further right was steep and deep!

Another brilliant application of the 'objet trouvé' school of course signage. I love functional signage which looks good, reuses existing materials and is unobtrusive yet fulfills its purpose. 10/10!

A nice start Martin. I'm looking forward to seeing more.

As to snakes and gator's, anyone involved able to advise on issues with them during construction and maintenance, not just critter-people issues but conservation, regulations etc?

The 4th green sits very nicely benched into this old dune/overburden mound. Fairway split with this big bunker. My guess is that the tight and slopey little green doesn't have an awful lot of pinable areas, so the split allows for maximising strategic value (or it just looks good!).

When you're standing around the 4th green on red, you can look out over the clubhouse and a good bit of the property which is perfectly framed between two dunes.  Visually this is my favorite place in all of florida.  Although 4Red is a quality hole and my favorite viewing spot, 4Blue is my favorite, and arguably the best hole on property.

KRafkin,

You must be very tall.

You're confused again.
It's # 5 Blue that's one of the best, but, # 4 isn't far behind.

I think the expansiveness of the landscape is one of Streamsong's most valuable assets:

Along with phenomenally strong par 3's, both visually and in the playing:
