Jim:

Herbert Stong was brought in around 1919 to "improve" the course.  My guess is those bunkers were his handiwork.

Bill,
The caption says it's the 17th.
Jim and Bill - I'm not sure it's Columbia. The topography doesn't look right for the 15th hole. Given the direction of the photo, the elevated railroad track should be visible on the right. Also, I don't think there was a stream and bridge crossing the fairway before the hill. The stream that connected to the pond on the 16th hole ran to the right towards Conn. Ave. If the photo is identified as the 17th hole, that makes me more suspicious.

The small print in the photo says "Levick" which probably refers to Edwin Levick who was a maritime photographer based in NY. He died in 1929. I found a couple photos he had taken of golf courses, one unidentified and the other of Baltusrol.  Absent any other info on the photo, I really doubt it's Columbia.

Jim,
Mea culpa. It is certainly the 17th, not the 15th. What confused me was the angle of the photo. The area to the right is the start of the 18th fairway.  Barnes is driving to the left of the tree line so the 17th green and fairway aren't visible. I was also looking for a pond in front of the tee and when I didn't see one I assumed it couldn't be the 17th. Of course, the pond was added after the Open. I have a photograph of the 18th green taken at the same time - the crowd is about the same size and the weather looks the same.

Check photo "D" off the list of unknowns.   ;)

Nice find Jim and Craig

Craig,  Is there any way you could post the photo you have of the 18th green?  I'd like to see what the 18th hole looked like in 1921.

Thanks,
Bret

I found this interesting. This photo from the early 1920s

was taken from almost exactly the same spot as this one in 1957:

Craig,
Nice!

What do you think the rectangle near the tee in the old photo is? A bunker?

Jim,

If it's not a bunker, maybe it's an old (or alternate) sand tee?

Craig,
Looking at your photo comparison seems to suggest that the caption should read 18th hole.  ;D
