The Accidental Genius
« on: December 01, 2014, 09:14:36 PM »
I was looking through an old Golfweek Magazine (March 2012) and came across this article Brad Klein wrote about Pete Dye called The Accidental Genius.  Brad did a fantastic job telling the story of Pete Dye and more I read about Pete,  the more I admire him.

I could not find a link to the article to share, if anyone can please post for others to read.

The article list some of the top architects that trained under Pete Dye:
Bill Coore
Brian Curley
Tom Doak
Perry Dye
PB Dye
Ron Farris
John Harbottle
Tim Liddy
Chris Lutzke
James McCoy
Cynthia Dye McGarey
David Pfaff
Scott Pool
Dave Postlethwait
Lee Schmidt
Jim Urbina
Bobby Weed

Garland:

I worked with Keith Sparkman and Rod Whitman back when I worked for the Dyes.  Both are great guys, but I don't think Keith has ever designed a golf course on his own [or been the lead associate for Pete on a project, either, that I know of].  If you're going to list him, there are dozens of other names, too, although Sparky has worked for Pete longer than most of the others combined.

Butch Laporte and Abe Wilson are names that are new to me.  Also, the correct spelling is David Postlethwait.

As for Gil Hanse, the question is whether you are including everyone who worked for anyone on the above list as part of the "tree", or limiting it to those who actually worked for Mr. Dye.

Tom,

Butch La Porte worked for Nicklaus Design on some projects around Europe, I believe he was involved with the Nicklaus course at Penati in Slovakia.

David - I don't know Butch and he may well have been involved at Penati, but it's my understanding that Dirk Bouts was the lead architect on that course.

Butch was the on site guy and project manager at Penati for Nicklaus Design, the original design was done by Tom Pearson and finished by Dirk Bouts. I am sure Butch has spent the last few years in Russia working on a Nicklaus signature project.

So when did Butch ever work for Mr. Dye?  Or was that a mistake?
