Congrats to Dismal River. Home to a course by the finest architect of our day.

Someone should note that this is very funny.

I nominate myself to do so.

This comment rings true to multiple audiences.  I don't know John at all and was unsure if it was a joke.  Well played.

Another magazine that agrees that Jack was The Man this year.  3 out of 6 developments of the year:

This reminds me of a kind of debate one might have regarding actors and the Oscars. If the Oscars were meant to reward outstanding talent, then any year in which Brando, or George C Scott, or Robert DeNiro or Denzel Washington appeared in any film they should've gotten the Oscar for Best Actor, as they were (often by wide margins) the best/most talented actors of their generations. But since the Oscars are meant instead to reward performances in a given picture in a given year (which is as it should be) there needn't in theory be any surprises when a good solid actor given a wonderful role and fine direction delivers that kind of great performance and is recognized for it with an Oscar. Talent doesn't (primarily) exist in theory or in a vacumn -- indeed, it strikes me as a virtually meaningless concept until it is attached to/made manifest in an actual performance or work of art, or through a golf course that exists not in the imagination but in fact.

Peter

All true in theory and a good analogy.

However, haven't the Oscars long bern a merry-go-round of awards primarily handed out to those names which best feed the machine? Anyone see the similarities? Then again, since it's becoming increasingly cool to recognise 'art,' I imagine they'll be some sort of Sun Dance award before long.
In the places where golf cuts through pretension and elitism, it thrives and will continue to thrive because the simple virtues of the game and its attendant culture are allowed to be most apparent. - Tim Gavrich

Possibly.  And isn't Potomac Shores a redesign?

P.S. to Paul Gray:  I thought Golf Club Atlas was Sundance.

I noticed on Jay Flemma's blog today that he says Keith Foster is the architect of the year, for his restorations of Philly Cricket Club and others.  Perhaps that is more to the liking of this crowd?

Either way, congrats to Jack and staff for their awards, and to Keith for his.  Great guys and architects.

The story here is that you read Flemma's blog without being prompted. Congrats to Jay. What's next, Doak sending me a Christmas card?  Miracles never cease.

JK,

1. It comes up on my Facebook news line, as we are FB friends.
2. We are real life friends, sharing a love of hockey and golf architecture.  I took him to a New Years Eve Stars game years ago with the band Bowling for Soup and it was a memorable night.  Recently, he had me on his podcast (not even sure it has aired) as both a golf course architect (part 1) and Western Conference NHL prognosticator, since he (like most sports media) only really follows the northeast teams, even though in the NHL, the west is where it's at!
3. It's a nice blog.

Jeff,

1. I don't have Facebook. Sounds like a nice feature.

2.  I prefer http://www.weiunderpar.com but we aren't friends.

3.  Nine million people watched Peter Pan live. Hate watching is a fascinating new media trend. I'm a huge fan.

JK,

1. Actually, FB getting somewhat passe.  You haven't missed a lot.
2. Nice plug. She is cuter than JF, that is for sure.
3. As is often the case with your posts, I have no idea what no. 3 means.
