Ten Years on Golf Club Atlas
« on: December 10, 2014, 01:30:51 PM »
As of today, I have been on this website for ten years.  I took a look at my posts over that time period and my primary impression is "what a lot of drivel."  Nonetheless, the review brought back some pleasant memories and a few lessons I have learned.  Here is my Topp 10 list:

1.   The make up trip is still golden
http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,37432.msg769432.html#msg769432

“But the best strategy of all --- THE MAKE UP TRIP

This is my go to strategy.

Schedule a separate pure golf trip with golf partners shortly before the family/spouse trip. On the golf trip, have a great time and play as much as possible. On the spouse/family trip - make it one you are excited about and do not mention golf.

The result - your spouse is happy because any lingering distaste about you golf trip is replaced with anticipation of and memories of your great second trip.

The best part of the plan - you are a double winner. You have gotten to take two great trips."

2.   All of the big events are worthwhile (KP, Dixie, Buda) are terrific experiences:

BUDA

3.   You can blindly play with a GCA member and know it is likely you will have a great time.

4.   You can make a difference at your golf course and should strive to do so.

Green Committee advice:  http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,20474.msg366592.html#msg366592

5.   Making a difference at your club is more of a political challenge than a conceptual challenge.

6.   Driving distance has been effectively constrained by the USGA despite our fears ten years ago:

2014 (difference 20.3) 5.  Andrew Loupe 308.0 100 Boo Weekly 288.3

7.   I joined one of the first clubs I criticized:

8.    If you jump into the fray regarding a golf course, understand it will be public

Musselburgh – My posts here wound up on the save Musselburgh website and it turned out we visited friends that lived next to the course and were appalled at the proposed changes.

Minneapolis – it turned out that the two antagonists in the club battle over this renovation plan were two good friends.

Kingsley – my comments wound up on the Kingsley website

I look forward to the next ten years.  Despite all the whining that this site is somehow less than it once was, I do not really think that is the case.  Several discussions on the first page, such as "Strategic v. Penal,"  "what is wrong with Contrived"  and the photo of the year thread represent this discussion group at its best.

Congratulation Jason. You've clearly made some valuable, proactive contributions.

Obviously you deserve your place in the GCA Hall of Fame.  8)

It's always fun to go through old threads.  I recently found this one where both Ted and Tiger took fun loving jabs at me.  http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,52752.0.html

It's not a thread I would wish upon anyone.

Jason, I have no frame of reference to understand what it takes to be that organized!   :o

I know we have the research button, but still, to pull it all together or keep track of your treads somehow separately is remarkable to a fellow that usually can't find his keys or glasses...  ;D

I loved your various trip  threads, particularly Japan and OZ.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

Jason --

I'm sure I'm one of hundreds who would say:

It's been a great pleasure to get to know you.

Dan

P.S. Ten years! Time flies when you're ... gettin' older ...

Happy Anniversary! Will you celebrate by logging a few hours at the computer tonight while your wife goes out for a big dinner?  ;D ;D

On a serious note, your post is like a mega version of Shivas's excellent guidance to periodically review one's last 10 posts.

Closer to the truth than I would like it to be.  I did check the site throughout the day while my wife spent the evening in Manhattan.
