I am traveling down to visit family in the St. Petersburg area next Thursday-Sunday (12/11 - 14) and have a little window of time to get away.  I am meeting up with my former fellow-Western New Yorker, JNC Lyon, who fled the northern climes in 2013.

I'm holding a tee time for four golfers at the Belleview Biltmore (Ross - 1925) next Saturday morning at 7:32 and was wondering if anyone would like to join us.

It's always enjoyable meeting up with other passionate GCAers and putting a face to the names.  Please let me know here or through a PM.

If it was one week later I would do it.

Maybe in the future our schedules will align!

Ha!!

You had me swearing and questioning my powers for a minute.  But, from my Pinehurst curse experience, I usually bring crappy weather with me for several days, not just one fleeting moment.  Nice Photoshop job!

Besides, a few mitigating circumstances:

1) Technically, this wouldn't be against my promise, since this is primarily a family trip (which is why it didn't snow the last two times I played during my family visits).

2) A forecast of 37/28 does not mean golf would be off.  Don't forget, JNC Lyon was one of my cohorts on this day:(http://www.golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php/topic,50739.0.html

3) That 85 inches of snow is "so two weeks ago"..  Golf season is already back on here in Buffalo

Dudes,

Don't be bashful about messaging Kevin or me about golf on Saturday. We are both swell gentlemen to play with. I have a competitive streak that sometimes causes my temper to flair a bit, but I try to limit my club throws to 3 per round nowadays. Kevin is a genuinely good guy who only goes shirtless on the occasion that the Bills pull off some sort of dramatic comeback victory (which, fortunately or unfortunately, depending on your view, isn't likely to happen soon with the Bills's sub-par Red Zone attack). As a bonus, you will get hear Kevin, the ultimate people's golfer, razz me about how I'm just a "country club kid" after I make some very legitimate point about the flawed maintenance practices inevitably being implemented at whatever course we are playing.

If the caliber of people does not sway you, Belleview Biltmore is a very solid Ross track with a great set of par threes. You will also get to encounter an amazing group of snowbirds that frequent the course. The first time I played there with a certain Central Florida Crossfitter, I was accosted by an angry German tourist after I accidentally drove into his group on the second hole. I tried to apologize, but he chastised me for having poor distance control with my driver. I attempted to explain that my excessive use of my company's free onsite gym was causing me to hit the ball distances I was hitherto unable to think possible, but he just told me he would throw my ball into the woods the next time it happened. My advice: if you do join us on Saturday morning (how could you not after this rousing sales pitch?), don't hit anything more than a 220 yard shot off the tees.

I was already kind of bummed about not being able to join you guys - I've been meaning to get back to the Biltmore for quite some time - but after this breakdown of pending events I'm just shattered! Enjoy the Biltmore, and look forward to your report. Contrary to reports above it looks like you should have some of our brilliant Florida weather (I'm not too far away in Ocala).

I am sorry this Central Florida Crossfitter can't join you and your "instructor" Saturday, Kevin. I enjoy lifting heavy things over my head to  USAW standards way too much.

Belleview is stunning in its simplicity and presentation. Very fun. Just try not to the throw the pipe off the tee on the very neat 14th hole like I did.

Sorry we couldn't meet up again.  I haven't looked at anything re: Belleview, so I'm excited to experience it with no preset expectations.  I'll be back again in the Spring, so we'll try again then.

Last call in case anyone had some availability free up.

I'll probably cancel the extra spots tomorrow morning so let me know.

Thanks,
Kevin

Some highlights from today:

  • We played 18 holes in 3 hours. A cart was mandatory, but still, it was excellent pace.
  • I'm a big fan of the par threes at Belleview Biltmore. In particular, 15 has an awesome volcano green site.
  • There was no sign of angry German tourists, fortunately.
  • Kevin was disappointed there wasn't more elevation change on the property, but he generally enjoyed the course.
  • We toured Belleair Country Club afterwards, which does have some elevation change. Due to my clean-cut All-American appearance, we were not kicked out for trespassing.
  • We found an awesome BBQ joint in Largo. I think it's just called Smokin' BBQ Rib Shack. The chopped pork there is off the chain.

Sounds like a great day, and you certainly had awesome weather for it. I walked 9 earlier and it was sublime... I hope to make it down to both Biltmore and the Belleair courses in 2015. Ironically, a few buddies and I were just down to Innisbrook (where there's quite a bit of elevation change..at least for Florida) and when we arrived we discovered the St. Pete Rib Fest was going on. Naturally, this improved our trip exponentially...

I played there in November, I agree the par threes are very good. I really like 17 and 18 is  bear of finishing hole. I used to play it fairly often since it was the closet course to Sand Key where my parents spent a few months each year. I've also played the East course at Belleair CC. It's very short but fun. The greens we pretty fast for a Florida course The only elevation change I remember was a par 4 on the back nine that drops straight down hill to the intercoastal and then the par 3 next hope going back up hill. The West course may have more.

I played Belleair CC West a few years back, so I was hoping some of the (surprising, to me) elevation change from Belleair would be there for Belleview.  Unfortunately, there wasn't much of any note.

That doesn't necessarily make a course weak, but a lack of natural topographical features is going to lead to a certain amount of homogeneity, especially off the tee.  So while the bunkers may have been strategically placed, the tee shot visuals and execution requirements tended to blend together in my mind, especially with the number of holes that were largely straight-away off the tee.  The back provided a little more variety and angles to play with, but the front was a string of 25-30 yard wide fairways, which made the teeing demands fairly one-dimensional.  I much prefer courses with diagonal landing zones and contours that require you to consider the roll-out of your tee shot.

I would agree that the green complexes were very good, which did provide interest, but I've always weighed the variety and excitement in the tee-to-green game more than green features alone.  So while Belleview was a course I could appreciate in my head, it wasn't the type that would capture my heart.

****************
As for Belleair, when I played the West, I also drove around several parts of the East.  The West property is blessed with a little more topography, especially the holes near the water (#1-6) and the several running alongside Indian Rocks Road and the corner by Belleview Boulevard (#12-15).

The East gets the benefit of this section of land before and after crossing Belleview Boulevard (on hole #3 and hole #18), but the bulk of the course across Belleview Blvd (#4-13, #17) is fairly flat.  The exception is the little 3 hole stretch you mentioned (#14-16), which I really enjoyed.  The approach on 14 toward the water is beautiful, the little uphill par 3 is very neat, and the drivable 16th is a great short 4.

What I found more interesting about the East vs West was the contouring of the greens.  The older West course's greens had much more severe and angular banks, while the East featured more rounded contours that blended into the putting surfaces and created collection / chipping areas.  I'm not sure if Ross inherited some of the original West course work or if he simply employed a different style in the later design.  The East course greens were much more similar in feel to what we saw down the street at Belleview.
