I know where Brian is coming from but an occasional dose of modern inland as a bit of variety can be nice sometimes, and some modern is very well done IMO even though it might not look like or play like all the coures built up to and including the 1930's that we mostly drool over and crave to visit or join.
In addition, although I love my Colts and Fowlers and Braid and Dr MacK's etc etc, the occasional game at a modern brings home just how good the old 'uns really are, and how far the game has progressed, although not necessarily in a direction we'd all like. I woundn't want to play modern all the time though, just like I wouldn't want to play all links or all heathland or all parkland or all desert etc. Done that, and it can get boring after a while, a wee bit of variety is nice.
Some moderns, especially the higher profile ones, are distinctly pricey, OTT pricey probably. However, over the winter period there are a lot of very good deals at moderns, straight-up deals too, no need to use Golfnow or the like, and many of the moderns, particularly I imagine the higher profile ones, have damn fine drainage and USA spec greens etc so are very playable even during a tradional UK winter period.
Which moderns would folk recommend to visit over this winter period taking the quality or the course and the price to play into consideration?
