Rumson CC (NJ) Getting A Tripp Davis "Facelift"
« on: November 06, 2014, 02:55:39 PM »
I noted this on the thread about unmentioned courses, but thought it might be worth a thread of its own. Anyone ever played Rumson CC?

I feel Tripp Davis is the most underrated architect in the business. He's done some very good courses from scratch and revisions/remodels that have caught the eye of his peers. The golf world will be hearing more of Tripp's work in the future and he can play, quite possibly the best player among the architects (minus the pro players ).

Walked the course twice.
Some of the elevated greens on the back nine caught George Bahto's attention for their boxy nature
He thought Raynor might have paid a visit.

1st green stands out from all others for contour - I swear it's a Travis green - there's a couple NY Times articles that link him to the course

The elevated greens on back nine stand out, but the course is very low profile on the front and underwhelming in places.
Flooded quite a few times, likely inundated completely by Sandy
Story of the clubhouse relocation to that site is pretty awesome

They own an elevated area - created by dredging - that they were looking at turning into new holes with an ocean view

Probably so to some degree Ian:

Willie Horton had a look at the 'new' site in 1908, as this Evening Telegram NY article from Nov 21, 1908 suggests:

Another reference to Kellogg as having laid out the course, this time w/help from several amateurs and professionals. Naughton was the pro and he was formerly Horton's assistant. from The Sun, July 3rd, 1910 :

Barker 'appears' as the new Pro in this article from The Sun, dated April 13, 1911:

They were definitely trying to stiffen the course up, as described in this Evening Post article from April 23, 1910:
