Crowbush Cove?
« on: November 06, 2014, 10:15:32 AM »
So playing Prestwick this summer with my son, we joined up with a nice fellow from Canada.  He mentioned that he had traveled extensively to play golf in Canada and the UK.  I asked him what he thought was the best course in Canada and he said "Crowbush Cove"....

Frankly, I didn't remember hearing about it...I said have you played "Jasper, Banff, St. Georges, Cabot, Highland Links..."?  He said yes and that Crowbush was better than all of those.

Okay, someone here surely has played Crowbush on PEI ...what is the story?  Strengths?  Weaknesses?

SCORE Golf's 2014 ranking puts Crowbush 14th in the country -- I think a lot of people would put it lower if not for the oceanside setting.

Bart,

I have only played Crowbush once and that was 7-8 years ago. No doubt it is a good course but I don't think I have ever heard anyone suggest it is even in the top 10 in this country.

I enjoyed it, it has great views of the water, etc. The course I enjoyed the most on PEI was the Dundarave course at the Brudenell Resort. Dundarave is a "big" course in the sense it takes up a lot of land, has wide fairways and large greens which were interesting. It is a Hurzdan/Fry design.

Bart,

Here are links to some reviews.  It is relatively highly ranked in Canada, but I doubt that many would put it at the top of Canadian courses.  It was created to help kick start PEI as a golf tourism destination and is very good, but not great, in my opinion (given I have only played it once).

Bart,

Then he likely preferred the K Club to Lahinch

Crowbush is a very good, modern course with a very good setting in a special place (PEI). I think there may have been potential for the site to have been quite spectacular if permits had allowed (have no idea what restrictions were faced), but even as is, it is a very good golf course.

It has been several years since I played it but I had a lot of fun playing it. We played the day after a televised exhibition match between Mike Weir and Vijay Singh. As a result the greens played super fast for someone like me. The holes along the Gulf of St. Lawrence were great the inland holes did not stand out for me with the exception of number 11. I have played Highland Links and Cabot Links and although I had fun at Crowbush Cove, it does not match either of the other two. One thing I did appreciate at Crowbush Cove were the course marshals who were active in keeping a good pace of play.
Check out the course for yourself through the videos.

Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

Though I agree with many of the comments here, I think some come across a little harsh because they are taken together with the comment that it's better than "Banff, Jasper, St. Georges, etc."

Crowbush is a very good, modern course with a very good setting in a special place (PEI). I think there may have been potential for the site to have been quite spectacular if permits had allowed (have no idea what restrictions were faced), but even a is, it is a very good golf course.

I for one enjoy it every time. It may not be better than Jasper, Highlands, Cabot etc., but it's no push over either.

You say it's a very good modern course but taking it out of that box, is it actually a very good course in its own right?

You also suggest in your last paragraph that it's not as good as other courses but that it's equally no pushover. Are you perhaps confusing 'good' with 'hard'?

Paul, you misquote me. I said "it's a very good, modern course." I think it's a very good course AND a modern course.

The first bit is clearly my misreading what you wrote. Clearly I missed the comma. My bad. Sorry.

I'm not quite sure how "may not be as good as X,Y,Z but it's no pushover either" doesn't imply a link between difficulty and quality. Maybe it's just lost in translation when it travels across the pond.

It's funny about the last part because I have no clue how I am implying anything about difficulty. I am trying to say I don't think the course is a push over in terms of being a good course.

All good Paul.

I suppose I could have been clearer. No harm in asking.

Hopefully I've made it a bit more clear.

It's funny about the last part because I have no clue how I am implying anything about difficulty. I am trying to say I don't think the course is a push over in terms of being a good course overall.

Ah, then it was indeed lost in translation. Over here "push over" could only be used to imply someone or something was easy. As in "He was easy to beat. He was a push over."

Sorry again.

I went up to PEI this summer (August) and played it. It was $100 and for the value on a vacation, I'd say its fun. Wouldn't go out of my way to play it again though.

It felt like a Palmer/Nicklaus course that was very manufactured. It's a spectacular piece of land with holes playing along the ocean but I came away wondering what could've been, rather than feeling it was a great course.... And lots of mosquitoes!!! Even with spray on I was getting bit.

It's also misrepresented as "the links at crow bush cove" and i have no idea why they call it a links course- trees are all over. Course was pretty wet so not like you could play it along the ground as a links course either.

I'd recommend Stanley thompsons Green Gables over crowbush cove.
