Edison (Emmet) or Mohawk
« on: September 28, 2013, 02:19:22 PM »
These two Devereux Emmet designs near  Schenectady,  NY are seldom discussed.  For those who have played either of them , which  of the 45 holes, or features stand out  ?

thanks !

Mohawk and it's not even close. There is nothing wrong with Edison but Mohawk is just much more interesting with way more interesting greens and a great variety of long and short holes. I don't think you will be disappointed.

This guy might not know what he's talking about, but I thought I'd post this '49 article about Mohawk:

The May 1910 edition of The American Golfer has a rather detailed article on the history of Mohawk GC up until that point.

http://library.la84.org/SportsLibrary/AmericanGolfer/1910/ag37n.pdf

The article notes the following with respect to the 18 hole course that replaced the initial 1898 9 holer:

"The task of laying out the golf course devolved upon the late Samuel M. Hamill, who received much valuable assistance in this undertaking from Mr. Devereux Emmet, of Garden City, and Mr. A. F. Knight, of Schenectady.  The plans were submitted to Thomas Bendelow, who made several valuable suggestions, which were adopted..."

"As much as we have learned about the history of golf architecture in the last ten plus years, I'm convinced we have only scratched the surface."  A GCA Poster

"There's the golf hole; play it any way you please." Donald Ross
