I'm planning a trip to the Troon/Prestwick area next summer for a group of guys from my club. I'm thinking that we probably should spend our last night in downtown Glasgow before getting on a plane the next morning.

Any recommendations for a nice hotel that is convenient to good restaurants and pubs? I'm looking at the Malmaison Glasgow.

Any "must see" pubs?

Malmaison is a good choice.  The Horseshoe Bar is a not miss.

Don't dress in either emerald green or royal blue.....

Yes,I like the Chip too, and it's a bit of a Glasgow fixture having being going for forty years or so. Definitely worth a visit.

I recently stayed at the Z Hotel near Victoria Station in London. The rooms are very small, but are very nice and rather inexpensive. There is also a Z Hotel in Glasgow.

Best to avoid wearing clothing that's either coloured green & white or light/royal blue. If you do, you're likely to offend some of the natives!

The Wee Pub at the Chip is a must see.

Ubiquitous Chip http://www.ubiquitouschip.co.uk/     - The Chip is probably the best restaurant and probably most famous in Glasgow. An institution. Also has a great pub called the “Wee Pub”…heart of Ashton Lane.

Number 16 Restaurant http://number16.co.uk/ - not on Ashton Lane, actually on Byres Road close to it, but many people think this is the best restaurant in the West of Scotland. Recently taken over by the staff, food still great.

2 West End wild cards:

Ashoka - http://www.ashokarestaurants.com/Ashoka%20Ashton%20Lane/ - not sure your family is into Indian food or curry, but Glasgow is famous for both. Ashoka is worth a try and we never miss going there.

Two Fat Ladies - http://twofatladiesrestaurant.com/westend - best high end fish restaurant in Glasgow, have a West End location. Feels like you’re in London or NYC instead of Glasgow. Really good food.

Great place for afternoon tea and a meal is the former One Devonshire Gardens (now Hotel du Vin)  - http://www.hotelduvin.com/hotels/glasgow/bistro.aspx - it’s got a new chef who is really solid and really reasonable lunch specials.

http://www.grosvenorcafe.co.uk/ - good idea of some of the draws at Ashton Lane – also a cool movie theatre there if the weather is poor.

The one non- West End Restaurant worth checking out is Rogano - http://www.roganoglasgow.com/ - could rival the Chip as Glasgow’s most famous restaurant. A very cool and memorable experience, worth the drive to city centre.

From the Hotel du Vin you can walk to Ashton Lane (West End) to The Chip, Ashoka, Number 16. And The Wee Pub.

Staying in the West End of Glasgow will be a very pleasant experience for a short stay.

The city centre needs a lot of time to familiarise yourself with how best to eat / drink / roam / understand. The West End is all there for you, more leafy and beautiful and more instantly accessible to an enjoyable evening.

Although a late night bar crawl up Sauchiehall Street will give plenty of local colour....
