The most interesting part of the article on this NLE 9-holer at Taft is that it states that some people think Yale is Raynor's best design. I like Yale, but who really thinks that's Raynor's best design?

You think Cypress Point is better?   ;D

It would have to be Fishers Island, right? But could Yale be Raynor's most difficult course to build?

Would the disparity in most of the rankings be as large between Yale and Fishers if the latter didn't have Long Island Sound as a backdrop?

Wanumetonomy?

Deserves hidden gem status and is a blast to play. Raynor got an awful lot out of a small piece of land and delivered one of the best "Eden" holes I have seen.

Of course not. But Tim, the location of Fishers is more than a "backdrop." Sometimes wind comes off the ocean and sometimes that effects the golf ball... :)

Fishers Island is easily Raynor best piece of land, but you can't take away from his design because the  land was so good. As far as I can tell, FI was Raynor's masterpiece. It is his best course but not his most impressive piece of engineering.

Speculation: using templates so often made quick designs easier for Raynor.

Mark:

I get the feeling Wanumetonomy is Raynor lite. He did work there while concentrating on nearby Ocean Links. Wanumetonomy has no Redan and no Biarritz, but I agree with you. Many of the greens are fabulous! The Maiden Green (I can't remember the hole number) is the best I've seen of his. The Eden is sensational and there are others.
