How many golf courses in Scotland?

I know there are 578 affiliated clubs. Any estimate of total courses including unaffiliated clubs or courses?

There are at least 692 all told though this does include the odd 6 holer.

692, must mean per square foot there are more courses in England. I assumed Scotland was probably the most densely populated golf course wide.

Adrian,

it would be surprising if Scotland had more courses than England but it might have a higher number per head of population. I was amazed it had nigh on 700 myself.

I believe that Iceland is the country with the most golf courses per capita. In any event it outscores Scotland by more than an order of magnitude (i. e. more than 10 fold).

yes, Iceland is an example to us all about folk who have the true spirit of golf at heart. They build and maintain very simple layouts on the whole and enjoy them for what they are.

Ken,

it is very difficult to get accurate info on how many courses there are in Scotland but I have a list with 692 names on it and there is someone who has played over 650 of them to date so I think it is more reliable. Really the SGU should have this info and the fact that they do not says all that is needed as to why some places are in difficulties.

I believe it's 597 golf courses with a gentleman I interviewed claiming to track down the 655 golf courses which include the private courses, 6 hole facilities, etc.

It would seem that with 578 affiliated clubs, many with multiple courses, the number must be north of 600 at least. Thanks to all.
