Changes made at The Woodmere Club
« on: September 19, 2014, 02:40:14 PM »
Last winter, the team of, Joe Hancock, Don Mahaffey, Tim Benedict+ (Woodmere Superintendent), Rob Young, James Burt and myself, made some changes at The Woodmere Club on Long Island.  They were hit hard by Sandy in 2012 and lost a ton of Pine Trees among many other items due to the 6' of salt water on their property.
One stand of 75 pines was killed between holes 10 & 4.

An old view from above pre Sandy:

This was the plan we set out to build:

Here are a few before and afters:
Before:

After:

Before: Looking back over 10 green to the clubhouse - note all the dead Pine trees.

After:

This is where Brad Klein grew up as a caddy.
Here Brad is adding a photo of the clutter on the 4th and 10th tees to his "what not to do" slide show:

Here is the after:

Woodmere is over 100 years old and was expanded to 18 holes by Robert Trent Jones in the 50's.
We used the Jones inspiration to build that cool double runway tee - at grade.
Please let me know if you'd like to see more or if anyone played The Woodmere Club this year.
Cheers

Love the double runway tee. I don't know if I have ever seen that before.

Mike--

The only place I've ever seen a tee like that is the double 2nd and 10th tees at Bidermann in Delaware.  Ironically, it's a Dick Wilson design.  I will need to go in and take a look the next time I'm on Long Island.

Wow!  The work looks terrific.  I grew up not far from there, and have a friend who is a member.  I am now going to make it a point to visit when I am back on LI next month.

Congratulations on the great work and thank you for sharing.  I doubt I am alone in my interest in some more photos.  Please share them!

Amazing what a little tree clearing can do for a course.

Like what I see.  Or don't see.  Grin.

Here are many 'before' pictures, from a late July visit in 2012:

We have two different sets of tees for holes that go in opposite directions. 2 and 12 and 14 and 17. Each shares the back.  If I played back there these days I'm sure it would be fun to meet another group.   I've never seen anything like the double side by side tees with a small angle between.  Given the distance top players hit the ball, are there any dangerous situations where one group is teeing off down 10 and another is on 4 fairway or left rough?   20% off line at 280 carry....

Thank you fellas

Play at The Woodmere Club is low and friendly.
Their 5th & 9th tees connect backwards to an intersection point, but they are separate and at different levels.
I'd seen crossed tees before at Shore Acres and BraeBurn in Houston.
Adding yardage to #4 was a nice benefit too.
This did turn out very well, it feels even more open than imagined.

That fairway is super wide!

Do you cross over (hit to the left hole from the right side and right fairway from the left side)? That would be pretty strategic to me.

Has this motivated the membership to consider removing other telephone poles? It looks awesome. Mother Nature is great at guiding our hands.
