Thanks for the update!  Hopefully things get back to some type of normal quickly.  I already had my trip planned before the storm hit, so I don't qualify for the round of golf.  But, I will look for you in November.

2 golfing friends of mine were down there just as the storm arrived.

The storm evidently redirected toward Cabo during their flight from SF.

No one was prepared in Cabo as it surprised most everybody, and thus the tourists got the shaft.

She and her fiancé stayed 3 days then got a bus back to Tijuana, fortunately without it being robbed by the police.

She says she is never going back, and will be going to HI for in the future and pay the premium.

William - the storm sat out there for days as a Cat 1 that was moving west before it turned on short notice, strengthened and hit us. Little time to prepare and would have been no different surprise than if it hit the States. I will say that the Mexican Governments response has been incredible and I cannot say enough about their efforts...the opposite of what we did for Katrina.

Paul,

I have no doubt regarding the rebuilding efforts in Cabo and the surrounding areas.  The people there are a hard working and determined bunch with a lot of pride!

I have not tried to contact Bill O. since the storm (he's the only superintendent I know there), I'm sure he has had his hands full with the cleanup work and grow in.  And, hopefully your work there wasn't compromised too much.

All the Best!

Terry

I know alot of musicians in New Orleans who will certainly back this sentiment.
Some of the stories they have told are amazing regarding the horrible inadequacies that were being displayed.
Now these are reports from inteligent well established musicians and not just the "non desirable" element that has bee so criticised for their after strom behaviour.
The US dropped the ball in such huge dimensions after katrina, I just hope that Cabo is able to recover as NOLA has.
I look forward to starting to find out in December

Prepared for what? All a hotel can do is gather everyone in the designated space and ride it out.  Beyond that I would ask you to explain "got the shaft", what does that mean?

Perhaps your friend should consider the thousands of hotel staff that were looking after the tourists, not sleeping or able to get to their own homes which may have been destroyed or communicate with family until all tourists wee evacuated back to the comfort of their homes. Whining about such things given what those looking after you faced once you were gone is pretty self serving and shows a complete lack of compassion for those TRULY AFFECTED by the disaster.

Take this to the bank - the response to this by all involved has been infinitely than what the gringo government showed in New Orleans.

Amen to that
Pay the premium and go to HI...That makes sense so that one can feel like you never left the country...and people wonder why Americans tourists are viewed in a negative way across the world. ;)

Having survived Gloria, Sandy, and Irene, I am SO glad you and yours are okay and safe.  Thoughts and prayers to all my friends down there.

What was it Jerry Garcia sang that one time?  "We'll build ourselves another town, so you can tear it down again."  GO get 'em and see you in the spring.

First hand and self serving.

Assuming they were in a hotel I would suggest your friends sit and think about those that were serving them for 3 days without a clue as to their own families and homes, most of whom did not leave their respective resort properties until late Thursday afternoon after working 5 days straight with little or no food as it was being rationed for the guests who choose to return home and spread horrific tales of woe. Absolute bullshit.

You'll have to excuse me if I don't sympathize with your friends who were inconvenienced FOR 2-3 DAYS before returning to the comforts of their home while those that apparently failed to serve them adequately were cut loose after 5 days to find they had nothing left.

If you cannot understand that I don't know what else to say.

huh...lost it with the self serving aspect, as I know no one who is going to Cabo to be anything but   :(

so.....get over the victimology, their hotel was wiped out, as were the homes of most there especially those serving the tourists

glad you survived mostly unscathed less 10 lbs and Cabo will return, yet my friends understandbley will not, nuf said!!

15 lbs now  :)

The third sentence recounting your fiends story struck a chord. Saying nobody was prepared is less than accurate. Saying tourists got the shaft makes it sound as though the were abandoned which is far from the truth.

Perhaps after some time your friends will be able to look back and appreciate those that helped them after the storm before they were able to know what happened to their own homes and families.

Please feel free to PM me with any details you/your friends would like to share. If a specific hotel dropped the ball I would be interested in hearing about it.

For the record the guests that I removed from the golf course at 10 AM that morning were bitterly angry with me and my overreaction. I am guessing they now understand.

As of today there are 2000 of the roughly 14000 hotel rooms open for business. Many more coming on line during the second half of October and I believe all by Christmas at the latest.
Latest update:
October 15 - 5000 hotel rooms open
November 15 - 7000 rooms open
December 15 - 10000 rooms open

Most of San Lucas is cleaned up and open for business including Squid Roe, Giggling Marlin, Nick San, Baja Cantina, Solomon's, Capatin Tony's, Cab Cantina... you get the picture downtown has a relatively normal feel to it already, well except for Paul and Bill's new beards.  Wink

Walmart, Soriana (large supermarket chain), Almost every bank, All but 1 gas station - back open

Golf

October 1 openings
-Puerto Los Cabos
-Club Campestre San José
-Cabo Real
-Cabo del Sol - Ocean (back nine) - 9 holes $75 / All Day $125

October 4 openings
-Cabo San Lucas CC

October 6 openings
Quivira

Other
Palmilla - may be out of commission through November but may open sooner. Hit hard in maintenance office and electronics/irrigation issues must be addressed though the golf course is fine.

Querencia - some minor erosion issues, not sure they have set a date but it won't be an extended closure.

Diamante Dunes - Course is fine, just uncovering sand that migrated west  :) Paul can speak to specific dates and such.

El Dorado - No reports but assumption is they are fine apart from minor erosion and fallen trees/cacti

Mayan Golf Course (9) - Mid to late November opening

Cabo del Sol Desert - Opening sometime mid-November. NO issues just dedicating staff to clean up for this period as there will be little need for a 36 hole operation until we host the Taylor Made Invitational beginning Nov 17.

Ocean Course Front Nine - Likely November 1. Hole 7 was hardest hit in the region and while it should be put back together as of today it will still need some TLC so we can open in excellent condition.

Chileno Bay - No reports.

Update on the status of Cabo courses, much of what Greg communicated above:

http://www.travelpulse.com/news/destinations/los-cabos-golf-courses-poised-for-travelers-to-return.html

Of note regarding Tiger's new course at Diamante:

"Diamante said it is still trying to determine if it will be able to maintain the scheduled December opening of the El Cardonal course, and expects to make a decision early this month."

Thanks Pat. Finishing the clean up and repairs on The Ocean Course in the next week or two and then shift focus to the vegetation clean up on The Desert Course.

Officially reopen all 18 holes on The Ocean Course November 1 and Desert on November 17.

Greg / Paul,

I am glad to read about the progress in rebuilding Cabo, I have been keeping up on it the best I can over the internet.

I was looking for a little guidance.  I will be there Nov. 13-20 and I am thinking of volunteering somewhere, the only issue is for whom… As a golf course superintendent, something in golf would be a lot of fun for me, but I'm sure there are others that need help too.

If either of you, or anyone else reading this, can provide a couple ideas please let me know.

Terry
