Splendid Malcolm.

What setting have you been using with your Coolpix? Auto, landscape or do you adjust as you go along?

It has been many years since my last visit to Pine Valley, but remember more bunkers front the second green.  Is my memory faulty or has there been a change.

If I was your camera I would have killed myself long ago.  If the course in the pictures is supposed to be one of the finest in the world then somebody made a huge mistake in judgement, or the pictures suck.  Looks like a tribute course, to Arbor Links that is.

The malfunction may not be fatal. Local repair may be possible. It is also important to note that the more electronic that these cameras become, the more disposable they are.

Super duper Automatic on the settings.

I'm trying to enjoy myself playing golf here first and foremost. Not photograph the course and make professional presentations for a nit picking curmudgeon like Kavanaugh on Golf Club Atlas.

I like the camera as it is compact and very automatic so I can either keep it handy in the ball pocket of my bag or even just play with it in my left pocket. The thing I liked the least about it was turning it on and waiting for the lens to open and extend itself and then turning it off again to close and retract the lens between shots.

Also, wish picture quality was better. I noticed last month that photos taken with my dated iPhone 4s seemed much higher quality.

Perhaps this is for the best. It's time for an upgrade.

To paraphrase Joan Rivers, are those bunkers or Tupperware?  Every wrinkle and kink has been removed from the course.  It needs to be knocked down a few pegs before whatever they got catches on.

MacMalc:

I am still not convinced that they want pictures circulating from the happy "Vallley".

You had better weather than our rainy day there two Saturdays ago.

I did manage to take some phone shots of "Mucci's Hill and Pines" between the 9th greens / 10th tee and 18th fairway.  Will spend some time on vacation next week actually figuring out how to post pictures.

PAGING JOE BAUSCH;  Can you suggest a few good, moderately priced cameras for golf/landscape photos ? ?

Thanks for this.

An echo on your thoughts from me. 'Auto' and play golf first and foremost. I know what you mean about the slowness. I also get peeved when the twist button on top gets turned to another setting by accident - even if it's 'user oversight' by me when removing it from my pocket/golf bag! - and then the photo comes out vile.

I don't have an iPhone to compare against. I think others on here use their iPhones and seem to get good quality results. Maybe I need to go this way too.

Thanks for the PV photos. Looking forward to seeing more. Well done.

My current camera is about 2 years old now and I won't be upgrading anytime soon as I really like the pictures it takes:  Sony DSC RX100.  But it isn't cheap!

Bill,

I doubt that they care a whit at "the valley".

Besides, this post is about my camera. Subject matter of photos is immaterial.

If you were to start a thread with photos on how you broke a condom while with a swim suit model the subject matter of the photos would not be immaterial.  Pine Valley is much more than your average swim suit model.

There is a reason that it isn't cheap. Sony has been leading the pack with these wonderful cybershot cameras. Carrying them loose in the golf bag is a good way to shorten their life span even though they are better built each year.

Watch this pricey Sony of mine break tomorrow.  ;-)

I spent more for an extended warranty, just in case.  Glad I haven't needed it.

I use the following case from Tamrac that is very small, nicely padded, and I can still get into my pocket easily while I'm hacking it around:

I'm guessing that the reason my camera lens shutter broke was because I was swinging with it in my left pocket. Normally I am walking and carrying my own bag and just keep it in the partially open ball pocket.

With a caddy I did not have that option.

Lesson learned!

Malcolm,
regarding picture quality, jpeg mode for most cameras is sold at factory settings. There are adjustments that can be made to boost contrast and saturation. There are other settings as well. Leaving it set on factory might explain the poor comparison to other images. Nikon is highly respected and for good reason. I say that as a Sony man.
Find yourself a good website for discussing cameras and their output. It's not as much work as you would think and it will increase your satisfaction level for both golf and photography. Neither one need be sacrificed while on the links.

Thank you for taking the time to post these.

The greens look BIG in the first set of pics. And the fairways look wide too.

To my untrained eye it doesn't look as hard as it's purported to be - but what do I know?!

Joe,

The latest Canon Powershot G1 X Mark II at about $800 Just got raves from Consumer Reports! Better than a DSLR mirror based or so they claim. As for that I will have to wait until Bonus season andy then decide if it is a priority. Only 13 megapixles despite the huge rating.

As it happens I have a second Nikon Coolpix S6000, 14.2 megapixle point and shoot twin to the one that broke. I bought the camera for my daughter at the same time as the other. She left it behind with me as she is back in Edinburgh, Scotland now. I scavenged a battery and, voila, I am now ready to rumble again!

Therefore, you will all have to look forward to more crappy pictures from me for a while!

These reviews are very detailed. They have to be as the cameras are feature rich. It all comes down to printing. If you don't print, ergonomics will be just as important as image quality. If you print, image quality has to be king. That means shooting in raw.
Best of luck.

Joe,

This is complete gibberish to me.

Question is can it bang around in my ball pocket, then allow me to reach in, grab it, point and shoot, take a quick picture, drop it back in the pocket and then set down my bag, appraise the situation re: distance to hole, wind, elevation up or down, seasonal temperature in relation to expected distance of ball flight and then grab an appropriate club and swing away.

Can it do what I need it to do and make great pictures?  Can I rent one and find out before the big $$$ commitment?
