Top 10 Courses for the $$$$
« on: August 15, 2014, 02:01:35 PM »
Sounds like a Matt Ward article, but it's not. Only 2- Bethpage Red & Thunderhawk- seem to be in or near  major metro areas :

To put Palouse Ridge in there instead of Wine Valley shows they are completely out to lunch.

It's time to toss Wild Horse from these best affordable lists now that the weekend rate to walk is $51.50.  I showed up with three friends at 6pm on a Sunday evening and payed the $66 each to play with carts.  They knew we were rubes and stuck it to us while giving us the Nebraska smirk.  No twilight, really?

Great course, not cheap.

Just the fact that they only post the Monday-Thursday rate in the article is insulting.

Still cheap compared to Palouse Ridge at $99.

That would easily fit on my top 10 value list (that I have played) along with Lawsonia Links, Aiken Golf Club, World Woods (both courses).

Would like to know why Bethpage Red doesn't get more love. It's only lately getting its due respect, if it were anywhere beside the best municipal golf course in the world it would be considered a gem. I've played it hundreds of times and never get tired of it.

I will throw in my home course, Marine Memorial, on the Marine's base at Camp Pendleton. Solid Billy Bell bones, great site and they just installed an all new irrigation system. I play in the afternoons for $18. For So Cal, ANY course, yet alone a solid one like this, that's a steal.

Location matters. In LA dollars Rustic is the best value in the country.  The story of the fall of Rustic is a curious one. Klein poo poos about a view of some housing and everything goes to hell. Gotta be a back story.

Let's be honest, you were "hit and runners" and they could have stuck you for $125 with the same result. Correct?

No, it was a pit stop on the way to Kansas City where we had reservations at a casino. Even $60 was a stretch at 6pm on Sunday, the last day of a golf trip.

That has to be a Willie Nelson song, and I like Willie Nelson by the way.

By the way, Sugarloaf is Top 50 in Maine!

Why would you expect a discount for playing at 6pm? You and your carts will impart the same wear on the course as the 10am group and your experience will not be worse.  what entitles you to a subsidised round?

Twilight rates are common. Wild horse already established lower rates during the week so they must believe that not all rounds are equal.

Berkleigh in Fleetwood, PA is a seriously good golf course with a seriously good fee.  I paid <$40 on a Saturday morning last earlier this year.

It's a former private club and has hosted the NLE LPGA Betty King Classic.  It's also the course TGC's Rich Lerner grew up playing.  (http://golfclubatlas.com/forum/index.php?;topic=31906.0)

I just received the e-mail from Lawsonia that you can play Fridays after 3pm, either course, with cart and Friday fish fry in their new pub for $55.00.
I think the fall twilight rate is around 35-40 to walk.
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

I loved Wild Horse but can't believe it doesn't have twilight rates. I wouldn't pay $60 to tee off at 6.

Mike, Sugarloaf that bad?  It was added to our public upper New England tour next month.  I am wondering if it is not worth the effort?

Do a global version of this and Barnbougle Dunes/Lost Farm blows them all away. 36 holes of (arguably but probably) World Top 100 golf for less than US$100 green fee.

Played Rustic once, with Tommy Nacc.
He will disown me, but I think it is good,
but not really interested in the 2 hour drive to see
it again.

Like the concept of it though
