Jay the traditional British links tended to develop because of the railway. Lytham is hard against the line and has a station by the far end of the course. Ainsdale and Southport stations are both close to Birkdale.

Whilst it is not England, I think the weekend ruled Porthcawl as a definite NO to a future Open Championship, some of greens and tees are in danger from other holes and the marshalls said there are lot of areas very tight where people should not really be and that's with only 18% capacity of a full Open. The course was great though.

Here's a map of the links courses.

The key to the numbers in the South of England is the following:

33. Prince's
34. Royal St. George's
35. Royal Cinque Ports
36. Littlestone
37. Rye
38. Hayling
42. West Cronwall
43. Trevose
44. St. Enedoc
45. Royal North Devon
46. Saunton
47. Burnham & Berrow

I hope this helps. Sunningdale and Wentworth are both around London and very close to each other. I made a golfing trip to South East England last year. You may want to take a look at the thread where I posted my impressions on several course.

If you need any help, send me a message. All the best,

Ricardo

Blame Donald Steel.  ;D

Actually, it should include only the "Classic Golf Links of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland".
