Nice!
I'm glad he made the birdie. Up until then, all I was thinking was "Say it isn't so, Joe".
Why oh why did it have to be called "Big Bertha"? It means I can never in good conscience complain about Callaway ever again.
You're not a nice person, Jim, did you know that? Oh sure, you make yourself seem like a good guy, but underneath you're all about shattering our illusions...

Peter,
Most likely got "Big Bertha" from the WW1 German gun (its more aptly named in their language).   ;)

Amazing to think that a "big gun" back then was a 2W from 210 yards!  :o

Crump's big gun- Bolivar - as reported by A.W. Tillinghast

You're not a nice man, Jim -- I'll say it again and I'll stand by that statement. Why you take such obvious and great delight in shattering our cherished dreams I'll never know.

First it's Bobby Jones using an, egad, Big Bertha.

Now it's Mr. Crump using the "Bolivar" -- which use serves to reduce all our heartfelt and nuanced discussions about the greatness and uniqueness of Pine Valley down to a tawdry and all too common story of yet another long hitting technology lover designing a course simply to suit his own game!

Thanks. Happy new year to you too!
  :)

It wasn't coincidence that Callaway Golf named its driver "Big Bertha".

Ely Callaway was a distant cousin of and knew Bobby Jones. Either Ely knew of Jones' old driver or Jones himself gave Ely the idea to use the name.

I wondered about that too, but Callaway's literature always references the cannon, not Bobby Jones.

I found this in an article in Emory Magazine:  "...according to the company's founder, Ely Callaway, "Instead of just calling it `The Cannon,' I remembered from my reference books on World War I artillery this giant cannon on a railroad car called Big Bertha. And I said, We're going to call it Big Bertha."

BB was a big success, but it appears that Ely missed the fairway with that one.

Given that Bobby's time coincided with said cannon, it stands to reason that RTJjr named his wood after said cannon, making his and the Callaway club analogous.
