I think Niall mentioned the fact that the Score's Hotel didn't open until the 1930's on another thread.

I have at least one other problem with Phil's explanation.  According to Phil, the May 12, 1901 was supposedly written on Score's letterhead.   Would the 1901 Grand Hotel have created letterhead using a nickname?

After I provided you with proof that Tillinghast couldn't have been there, you messaged Ian Scott-Taylor and requested that he immediately send you (among other things) a photograph of the note showing the Score's letterhead.

Did Mr. Scott-Taylor send you that photograph?  Or did "logistics" once again keep him from providing you with the information you requested?

This phrase troubles me because it's not possible that it was written contemporaneously.


Not only could it not have been written contemporaneously, but it would have to have been written several months or years later to make any sense at all.

Which means that all entries in that particular bound book after this entry were also written months or years after the events they describe.

If subsequent bound volumes continue chronologically without break or overlap then they too must have been written 'after the event.'

There cannot be any other explanation.

Ergo, these are not journals - they are either;

a.    Memoirs by David Scott-Taylor written in a faux journal style.

or

b.    A complete fake written by somebody else.


You're a little late to the party Pat, but the point you make is crucial. David Moriarty has already covered it extensively but you put it better in far fewer words!

Duncan, it's very difficult to attend several parties simultanteously, ergo I apologize for being tardy to your party.

Incidentally,  I have received emails from many members of this discussion group supporting my stance. Several have submitted samples from the 'journals' to lexicographers for analysis to see whether the language and syntax used could possibly be authentic Edwardian English.

I await these results with much interest.

If I've learned one thing from watching "Pawnstars", it's get certificates of authentication from bona fide sources.

Until this matter is resolved (i. e. authenticity established or refuted), I believe it best to not make a mockery of one of the involved parties. After all, that party may turn out to have been correct after all and then would have been unfairly ridiculed on this board by people acting on a whim. I feel that would be a disservice to all of us.

There is no record in either the Olmsted correspondence or graphics to indicate Mac ever contemplated the 13th as a par 4 or that the green was to be anything else than it became.

Nor is there any indication of these changes in David Owens's definitive history.

The truly remarkable thing about the design is the exact opposite of what these materials indicate: that Mac spent bare days walking the property and from that just a couple months later developed a fully-formed design that did not change through the construction process. This despite the Olmsted partner asking for changes to accommodate housing.

Same. The material is so outlandish that I can't help but pity Mr. Frank - it would seem some additional research would have benefited here, but a stamp of authenticity goes a long way.

According the article, Phil is very much involved (my emphasis):

"Throughout that time, the drawings, along with other golf artifacts, were with the family’s lawyers, where they remained until about 10 years ago when they passed down to Scott-Taylor’s grandson Ian, himself a course architect. Since then, Young has had their provenance and other aspects of the drawings authenticated and has made plans for their sale: As of this writing, the sketches are consigned to Green Jacket Auctions, which is negotiating with a private collector for their purchase."
