Bunkered in Scotland
« on: August 21, 2003, 02:15:56 PM »
I got the August 22 issue of "Golf World" mag in this morning's mail. For what it is worth, an item on page 13 says that a poll of readers of "Bunkered" (a golf mag in Scotland)  ranked Loch Lomond as the "best course" in Scotland. Carnoustie, Muirfield and the Old Course finished 2, 3 & 4.
Do the natives know something we don't know?

I have never heard of this magazine, but I can provide a bit of perspective. Loch Lomond is one of very few quality courses in the United Kingdom that restricts outside play to almost nil. As such, it has acquired a certain cachet of exclusivity almost akin to Augusta or Pine Valley in the states. I would imagine that with the upcoming reduction in the number of members, that impression will only be compounded.

Of course, all of this hubub has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the golf course.

The same poll had Dalmahoy (East) as a "top 20" selection.  As Nigel implies above, no golf magazine ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the golfing public--even in Scotland.........

Rich-

Do you have the magazine handy? If so, I would be interested in what the top 10 or 20 ranked courses were.
Also, how was the question asked - what is the best course in Scotland? what is you favorite course in Scotland? etc.
Does the article say how many responses they received?
Thanks.

I just saw a PR piece on the article in last weekend's Scotland on Sunday (I think).  From what I could see it was a completely non-scientific poll of readers.  Nothing to get concerned about or even interested in.

Rihc,

Sort of like the polls around here where the readers pick McDonalds as having the best hamburger, Pizza Hut the best pizza.
