Jim:

The first hole looks like one of the hardest on the golf course.  How often is the green reached in regulation by the everyday player?

What a wonderful golf course!

Not often. I am sure the stroke average is probably around or over 5 for everyday play. Hitting it in the fairway bunker is a bad miss. Even without having a big lip you're left with 170-200 yards and a cross bunker to deal with. Great hole, certainly not designed as an opener. It did not become so until the East and the new clubhouse was built in 1970.

When the 2011 PGA Club Professional’s Championship was played at HCC one the West was used for one of the rounds. There were 312 rounds played over the course. The holes that played hardest relative to par were as follows:

Holes that played over par:

#8 Par 3: Average Score 3.333 (20 birdies versus 100 bogies and 12 doubles)
#12 Par 3: Average Score 3.192 (19 birdies versus 75 bogies and 2 doubles)
#4 Par 4: Average Score 4.189* (36 birdies versus 65 bogies, 12 doubles and 2 others)
#18 Par 4: Average Score 4.183 (1 eagle, 39 birdies versus 78 bogies and 10 doubles)
#16 Par 4**: Average Score 4.179 (26 birdies versus 72 bogies and 5 doubles)
#1 Par 4: Average Score 4.163 (31 birdies versus 66 bogies and 8 doubles)
#3 Par 4: Average Score 4.151* (39 birdies versus 58 bogies, 8 doubles and 4 others)
#5 Par 3: Average Score 3.119* (37 birdies versus 69 bogies, 1 double and 1 other)
#17 Par 3: Average Score 3.074* (61 birdies versus 50 bogies, 14 doubles and 2 others)
#10 Par 4: Average Score 4.061 (42 birdies versus 57 bogies and 2 doubles)
#9 Par 4: Average Score 4.038 (42 birdies versus 42 bogies and 6 doubles)
#11 Par 4: Average Score 4.013* (58 birdies versus 44 bogies, 3 doubles and 4 others)

Holes that played under par:
#2 Par 5: Average Score 4.955* (1 eagle, 68 birdies versus 45 bogies, 4 doubles and 1 others)
#14 Par 4: Average Score 3.946 (2 eagles, 70 birdies versus 49 bogies and 4 doubles)
#6 Par 4: Average Score 3.939 (1 eagles, 58 birdies versus 33 bogies and 4 doubles)
#13 Par 5: Average Score 4.933 (1 eagles, 63 birdies versus 36 bogies and 4 doubles)
#7 Par 5: Average Score 4.830 (3 eagles, 87 birdies versus 34 bogies and 3 doubles)
#15 Par 5: Average Score 4.631 (15 eagles, 122 birdies versus 26 bogies, 4 doubles and 1 other)

*“Others” were allotted a triple bogey given no other available information
**#16 played as a par-4 for the tournament

Some interesting aspects of the scoring:
Not surprisingly the 15th played the easiest relative to par. The pros made the most eagles and the most birds there. Interestingly of the scores that were above par on the 15th 24.2% of them were doubles or worse, this is by far the highest ratio of all of the holes (the 3rd and 4th were 17.1% and 17.7% respectively)

The two toughest holes were par-3’s, the 8th and 12th with neither hole seeing a score above double posted

The short par-4 3rd (354yds) and 4th (307yds) seventh and third most difficult holes on the course

The low round of the tournament on the West was a 62 (-10 with the 16th playing as a par 4) while the field averaged 72.93 (+0.93)

Having played the course right before and after the tournament it was not set up too much different than the conditions for normal member play. The greens were slightly more firm and the rough was slightly higher but certainly not overly penal. The bunkers did appear to have slightly more and softer sand in them at that time. This allowed the ball to plug more frequently and certainly made them more of a hazard for some of the guys I played with. I doubt the club pros had too much additional trouble with them however.
