Who said the following?
« on: July 07, 2014, 10:38:20 AM »
And what course is he referring to?

"Notice the jagged, overhanging lips of the sand traps.  I planted sheep fescue grass to get that tousled mane effect. It looks as though it had always grown there.  I'm particularly proud of the eighteenth hole...you can get home with two terrific [shots], but it won't be done very often.  I figure the [tournament] will be decided on this brutal finishing hole.  From where we stand on the eighteenth tee, look at all those white faces staring at you... Now walk with me down the fairway for 300 yards... turn around and look back toward the tee.  How many bunkers do you see?  None, eh?... Those bunkers have disappeared as though by magic – swallowed up in the natural folds of the ground".

First person to get it right is paid a big compliment!  And no cheating by using a lifeline like The Lurker or The Emperor!   ;D

I'll guess Tom Fazio. I think he likes "winking" bunkers.

No.  But you sort of have the 'geography' correct.  ;)

Two strikes!  And a caught looking for the third strike as you missed earlier in the thread where Jim Sherma did correctly guess the architect (William Flynn).

Merion?  Too obvious?
Don't play too much golf. Two rounds a day are plenty.

No and yes.   :)

Hint:  let's just say ole Flynn was quite prophetic with his comments....

I was going to say P V.

But with that hint it must be Philly Country where Sam Snead got caught up in the bunkers on 18 and lost his best chance to win a U S Open.

Work needs have impeeded my progress, but I will get to it this week.

For the course I assumed Merion at first, but Philly CC feels right.

We have a winner on the course!  The 18th back then at Philly Country is now the 3rd hole.

Good jobs Bill and Jim.   :)

I've never understood why the failure to see bunkers when looking back from the green is a big deal.  You hear that about Mackenzie's work as well.  What's the big whoop?

Bogey

It's a big whoop the one day a year when the course is played in reverse.   ;)

As an aside, Tom Fazio rebuilt the bunkers at Saucon Valley Old about 7 years ago. You can't see any of the sand in the fairway bunkers when you look back.
