Mulligans

Stealing Ron Whittens line about RTJ Jr. getting a mulligan at Poppy Hills, what other architects have been given a mulligan to rebuild a golf course and why?  Poppy Hills was just a tired 1980's style course.

Pete Dye had one at Carmel Valley Ranch which Dye didn't like and he waived his fee for the redo.

Gil Hanse had one at Rustic Canyon but that was because of a fire and flood.

Another Pete Dye course that was bulldozed and rebuilt is now the Dye Preserve.  Not sure what the first course name was?

The 12th hole at Dye's Carmel Valley Ranch was quite possibly the weirdest hole built in the past fifty years.

I do not have a photograph of the original but it resembled a lumber yard smack in the middle of the fairway. Drives would hit the woodwork and carom off into jungle.

On the whole he did a decent job with the land that was available. Rumor has it the when first asked by Land Mark Land to build an 18 hole course, he said he could build a very good 9 holes. The owners insisted on 18 holes, supposedly Dye was not a happy camper.

That hole made the Confidential Guide's eclectic 18 Worst Holes- it would be interesting to see a picture of the original.

Cypress Lakes or Cypress Reserve? Something like that. Mr. Webster bought it and had Dye redo it.

I once played with a guy who was a member of Austin country club, he told me when they moved the club they brought in Pete Dye to build the new course. When they opened it up rounds took over 5 hours because it was such a bear, and the members hated it. They spent the next two years totally redoing the new course.

Nicklaus got a mulligan at The Australian, then went and blocked his second ball into a bunker.

Many architects tweek holes and Doaks rebuild on Renaissance is just a major tweek.

I'm talking about about courses that the original architect was given the chance to rebuild for some reason.

Rework at Rustic was not a mulligan at all.

The original #7 was one of the best holes on the course.

Maybe the original #10 could have been conceived a little better,
the cross bunkers tweak improved it, but that was not from a fire.

Cypress Links before, but Webster owned it then too. Couple of Long Cove pros worked for him when he opened it in the late 80's.
It was redone in the late 90's or early 2000's
