Nippersink in WI?
« on: June 27, 2014, 10:54:39 AM »
Got an invite to play there next month, should I be in town (and probably will be.....).  Seems from aerial photos like its a pretty untouched Foulis course, too far out in the country, and too poor to ever renovate.  I was told they added one pond for drainage, and perhaps the bunkers have smoothed out a bit over the years.

Otherwise, it looks like a good museum piece to study Foulis architecture, at least from the air.  Any of our Midwest guys know anything more about it?  Thanks in advance.

ah never mind.
First time through the search button, nothing came up.  Second time, got a photo tour from 2009 that seems to answer most of my questions.  Opinions still wanted, though!

Jogging my memory, I once played what is now DellBrook in Lake Delavan, at that time, also an untouched Foulis, but now with 9 added.

I played it about 5 times and honestly can't remember one shot out there for whatever that's worth.

Jeff:

Shel and Kyle are pretty close to the mark -- although as a piece for studying Foulis, it might be worth a look. A good set of closing holes, (including a rollicking 18th) and a decent set of par 3s with some variety. Foulis is quite subtle, for the most part, from what I've seen, and Nippersink doesn't come at you with anything dramatic or over-the-top. The land there is pretty basic and not very dramatic (e.g., Bendelow -- for a contemporary of Foulis who also did work in Wisconsin -- had much better land to work with for his courses here).

For a solid Foulis in these parts, I'd recommend Bonnie Brook in Waukegan, just over the WI-IL border, which is a very good and under-the-radar Foulis and a true muni.
