Fog at Royal Portrush
« on: June 17, 2014, 04:34:20 PM »
Is summer fog common at Royal Portrush? Play suspended for the day at the Amateur Championship due to fog with only a handful of completed rounds, looks like the championship will have to go an extra day.

Chappers,

I can't say if its common or not but I was there in June 2006 and I recall my morning round was delayed by a couple of hours because of fog.

Cheers,

James

Spent one month a year as a child in next door Portstewart.  I remember plenty of weather, but fog no.

I once waited 2hrs one day in July for the fog to clear at Stapleford Park Leicestershire.  Apparently it's not common there either!

One and only visit, had a 90 minute fog delay.

Next am, Crystal clear. No fog.

The only fog we had on our last visit to Portrush resulted from a rather length visit to the Bushmill's factory, and which while not meteorogically-related had very much to do with my inability to play very well the next day!

Mark that sounds like a very hazy affair!

We get the very occasional summer fog in Deal, certainly none since we've lived here (2 years), they must have been very unlucky yesterday.

Mark where are you getting your 'intelligence' from?  ;)

Seems like they all got round and local papers make no mention of the weather?

There was a two and a half hour delay in the morning due to the fog and then they ended play early. Not everyone got their second round in. See http://championships.randa.org/en/News/2014/June/Amateur-Chamionship-Update-Day-2.aspx

Half an hour behind this morning. Alistair Tait of Golfweek is there and tweeting that the haar is pretty close to the course. They should be starting matchplay today but Alistair says that won't be happening.

From a Deal member whose son is playing;

"Today was round two at Portstewart.  We arrived at 9.45 am for Henry’s 10.45 tee time.  We left the course at 6.30 pm having endured four weather delays due to fog having played just eight holes.  When he was able to play, he played pretty well, apart from misjudging the speed of the greens on the opening holes leading to two bogeys.  However, he followed this by a three iron into the wind on #3 to about two inches.

Wyndham fared even worse at Royal Portrush.  I dropped him at the course just before 6.00 am for his 7.00 am tee time.  When play was finally called for the day at about 6.00 pm, he had played just eight holes in eleven hours."

If the early start times at RP had only played 8 holes yesterday there are a very large number of rounds to be played today.

We're covered in Dublin at the moment... Unusual here...

Aberdeen all the time, Ireland less so....

The haar - sea fog stretching a couple of miles inland - very common in NE Scotland in the June-August period. For example, tee-off circa 5.00am-to-7.30am on a lovely sunny morning. Play a few holes and then....whooosh....in a few seconds in rolls the haar and it's with you for the rest of the day. Visibility down to 100 yds or thereabouts, sometimes even less. Time to pick up your ProV1 and walk in. Maddening. Go inland a couple of miles, wonderfully bright and sunny and no haar. Aaaargh!
