Cleveland Heights in Lakeland, FL is a muni course with 16 holes from the original Flynn routing.

Seaview Pines (Galloway,NJ) - 9 holes done by W Flynn.

You might be able to walk around Pocantico Hills at Kykuit - the Rockefeller Estate in Tarrytown NY.  I had heard it is not being fully maintained as a golf course now.  Too bad - it was the only reversible course I ever played. It is possible to visit Kykuit, but I don't know if you can walk around the grounds.

If you have an interest in playing Springdale  in Princeton,NJ, perhaps in the fall, drop me a P M.

Nigel,

What are your thoughts on the course and what are the 16 holes that still remain?

Kyle Harris has spoken highly of that course in the past.  I'd venture its not a bad track.

I lived in Lakeland for several years and I would have to disagree. A couple of decent features here and there but overall not that good. Cheap though.

If you want to see what I think are some untouched Flynn greens, visit Philadelphia's first muni, Cobb's Creek:

I would tend to agree with Greg. I had a blast as a second 18 holes for the day, but it's probably a Doak 3 at best. I liked the A 7th and 8th as well as the C 9th. It was originally going to be a pretty good course but the developer went bankrupt and it's been a muni ever since it opened.

I had a family lunch today with a new-friend, a retired Navy Admiral and USNA graduate who has a house in Annapolis. Hearing the "war stories" today at lunch, trust me, scamming your way onto Shinnecock is much simpler and safer  :D

Isn't the little nine-hole course that you have to pass to get out to Kittansett a Flynn course??

Someone could correct me, but I believe the public Pine Meadow north of Chicago is a William Flynn routing, that was redesigned in the mid-80's by Joe Lee.

Mike Sweeney:

I played with Kyle at Lakeland and to be fair, he is realistic about Lakeland. There is not much Flynn left. Speaking for myself <50%.

Updated by Kyle:

It was nice reading your mention of our round at Cleveland Heights.

I've done some research.

I actually think there is a ton of Flynn left, and let me tell you why:

1. The original back nine was not altered nearly as much as I thought and really the only thing modified are the bunkers. One can still play the original routing (which is quite good!) by playing the 2nd hole of the B Course from the forward tee as the original 250 yard par 3. Then you just jump to B-7, 8, 9, and C-1, 7, 8, 9 to round out the back nine.

2. The greens have improved in quality since we played, and as such a lot of the tilt and contour subtlety is back with improved speeds. I won't say they are drastic or especially noteworthy, but thought and care is required to score. I believe these are as close to what Flynn put into the ground as 90 years can allow.

3. As a result of the improved conditioning the angle of attack into the green is again critical and as one would expect from Flynn, attacking the green from outside the dogleg is a must.

If you would please post my remarks on GCA and mention to Sven that I would like to meet up with him at some point to play golf, I would appreciate it.

Hope all is well and we can meet for golf again soon, here or there.

Best,

Kyle

There is also The Country Club of Norfolk, now known as, Sewell's Point in Norfolk, VA. It was a Flynn and then redone by Ross and then our favorites, not really, Ault and Clark.

Kyle:

Would be my pleasure.  Not sure when its going to happen, as we seem to be on opposite sides of the country.  If you make it out to Oregon, any time soon, drop me a line.  If I get down to Florida I'll do the same.
